Interesting, isn’t it, about how we let little things into our lives. Like the lucky rabbit’s foot, the lucky penny or the lucky tie we wear when making a presentation. Most of us, at one time or another, have had our good luck charms. But what do they really do for us and is there danger in them?
Frankly, I’m not sure. I do know that there are times when such things can become extremely dangerous. That happens when we place “faith” in such things, that outcomes will be determined by them. This, quite simply, is idolatry.
Time and again in the Old Testament and even in the New Testament we are shown the fallacy, the uselessness of counting on false gods, idols. Yet since the beginning of time, man has created such things and counted on them to control our fortunes.
Recall Paul in Athens where they even had a statue to “the unknown god.”
And we as Christians can fall so easily into this trap. Everything from simple “lucky” items or routines to making idols of our symbols of faith. How may of us have fallen into the trap of worshiping the cross or some statue? Many are falling into this trap as has been shown in recent discussion here on “New Age Religion.”
Let’s keep things simple here. Only God is God. We can only put our faith in Him. Not in charms, relics, statues, beads or sayings. That does not mean that some of these things aren’t useful… when we keep them as symbols of faith and not as articles in which to put our faith.
Keep the armor up friends…
And have a fantastic week…
God willin’ and the creek don’t rise…
See how easy it is to slip!

Alive in The Word

I don’t know if it happens in the west, but a very favorite automatic reaction in the east is “touch wood” to anything mentioned that is ominous as if touching wood would protect them from evil. It is said the “wood” is the wood of the cross. However, nothing can keep us from evil except the Name of Jesus, Name above all names at which every knee shall bow, of things above, on and below the earth.
May we be given discernment and knowledge of the Word of God especially those of us who are called the children of God. May we know whose we are and who can really keep us from evil…. “and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
