“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country….But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” Hebrews 11:13-14 & 16
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Sarah all knew that this earth was not their true home. They knew that their real, eternal home was in Heaven with God.
In the verses surrounding these passages, we are told that these patriarchs lived by faith in God. Romans chapter 4 tells us that Abraham’s faith was counted unto him as righteousness.
It was their faith in God that assured them that they had a Heavenly home, that their city was built by God (Hebrews 11:10).
Jesus said “In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:2-3
As believers in Jesus we also must have faith that our permanent home is not on this earth, but in Heaven.
“Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:6
“For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” Hebrews 13:14
And if we believe that this earth is not our permanent home, then we must live this life with the eternal, end results in mind.
I have given my life to God, accepted the redeeming, precious blood of Jesus as a payment for my sins.
Therefore, I see this life that I am now living as a job – a job given to me by the Lord. He is my Boss, and it will be to Him that I answer when I return to that city which will be my permanent home.
“And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold … but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” I Peter 1:17-19

Confident in our heavenly home, personally prepared for us by our “big brother” Jesus. Confident in our earthly walk with Him enveloped in His Grace by the power of the Comforter He sent to us!
Thank you granbee.
Drusilla,
Y0u read well and stir the reader well also…Comes from God. As children of God…Truth blesses our lives. Examine the following verses closely..they relate to your blog…
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
…But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end
Holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling…”if” we hold fast until the end.
Holy people partake in the heavenly call “if” they hold on until they leave this world.
Hebrews 3
Thank you Rick.
From the moment of birth, we all are headed to hell. However, for some of us when Jesus came into our lives, He made the turnaround and now we are bound for heaven.
I pray that all who read this blog would realize the brevity, uncertainty of life and allow the Lord Jesus to save them from being hell-bound any longer.
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
Thank you ptl for that thought. This really is only one life here on earth – and there is no knowing when that life will end. The Bible makes it clear – there will be judgement on how we lived this life. The decision made about Jesus during this life is going to determine where we spend eternity – there will be no second chance after this life is over.
PTL…
That thought is where the old saying, “turn or burn” came from.
Thank you for this reminder. As a military spouse who must pack up her home every so often and travel to another temporary home on Earth, I have become quite accustomed to traveling lightly and letting the Lord lead. In fact, we are preparing for another interstate journey next month! It is always hard not to get too set in one place. Some places are nicer than others, but I am reminded that our home in heaven is our wonderful permanent home, better than any place on Earth!
Thank you faithfull4him. I can’t imagine what moving so often would be like. The farthest I have lived from my childhood home is about 30 minutes. I now live only 5 minutes away from my mom – who still lives in the house I grew up in. It makes it a little more difficult to think of this as a temporary home when one digs their roots so deep into this earth – maybe that is why God ‘hit-me-over-the-head’ with the realization that this is a temporary job and I will be moving permanently at the end. What hope we have!
“Therefore, I see this life that I am now living as a job – a job given to me by the Lord. He is my Boss, and it will be to Him that I answer when I return to that city which will be my permanent home”.
I like this statement, it rings with truth. Great blog.
Thank you Greg. I was reading Hebrews one day and suddenly I realized that this really is like a job with God as the Boss. And when we finish, we will be called home. What a realization! It gave me a whole new perspective on what we need to be doing.
Yehhhhhh…..Caaallllll on the FATHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
It’s the only way.
