For nearly two weeks, my wife fought a terrible sinus infection accompanied by disabling headaches. She took the normal over the counter remedies, no relief. She went to urgent care and got a prescription, no relief. We prayed… no physical relief. Finally she went to our family physician and got a stronger prescription… finally, relief!
So, where is the miracle in this! This is just science, right… chemistry meets biology.
To answer this we must go back a ways, back to “In the beginning… “
In the beginning, our Creator created, well, everything! This immense universe was created using itty bitty things called atoms. (actually, matter is made up of things, much smaller than atoms, but atoms will do) That alone is impressive, but hardly our entire physical universe. He also created the means by which all of these things work together, the relationships we call the Laws of Nature and which we have come to understand (partially) through science. Pretty smart Guy, our God.
Then He created man (and woman to be pc about all this.) And he made us humans stewards of His creation.
This glorious God also gave us minds, via which we can learn about and come to understand His creation and what makes it work. Science. Physics, chemistry, biology. These are really nothing more than the discovery and understanding of God’s creation. But it’s pretty heady stuff, this science.
The abilities of humans to think and reason, to put together understanding of complex relationships are among God’s great gifts to us. It provides a means by which we can improve our human condition here on earth.
OK, big deal. So where’s the miracle? God gave us the start-up capital. Now, why do we need Him? We have science.
Through the study of science, we discover and learn. Through the application of science, we grow and develop. We discover and invent. (Note, I did not use the word create here.)
Think for a moment how complex our physical universe is. It boggles the mind. Yet the human mind is capable of great things. We’ve only begun to tap its potential. It is capable of handling trillions of relationships. (Now, I realized that in today’s economy, a trillion doesn’t seems so big, but it really is a big deal) But to God, this is only a trifle.
Now, if God had invented all these things, and held the patents, just think of the royalties He’d collect. But since He is already the owner of all things anyway, He doesn’t need the royalties. He leaves those to the custodians of His creation.
So again, where’s the miracle? It’s in the beginning… with the creation not only of the matter of the universe, but the laws of nature by which it all works so perfectly. Isn’t this all awesome! And this didn’t evolve. It was created! Wow…
And we began studying this, toying with our knowledge until one day… Eureka… Aspirin! The miracle isn’t the drug… it’s the creation of matter and how everything works so perfectly together. Our awesome God gave us the tools and the means to discover and invent, to make good use of His creation. And I’ll bet His smile is broad when His children put these things to good use.
Praise be to our awesome God!
