BARRELLED! – Under the circumstances?

People sprawled all over the place, trying to stand, only to fall again.  They were laughing and having fun, but try as they could, they were unable to stay upright.

It was at an amusement park and they were trying to walk through a barrel-like contraption with flashing lights and whirling objects.  It tilted and turned.  A prize was offered for anyone who was able to walk through on their feet without slipping and sliding.

One man entered the barrel boasting that he had perfect balance and could remain upright.  He took only a couple of steps before he too went sprawling and sliding.  At the end, embarrassed, he declared no one could possibly achieve it, called the ride a rip-off and demanded his money back. Then the owner entered the barrel and walked straight through, proving it was possible, and silencing the man.

How did he do it?
Well, of course he couldn’t reveal his secret but it was simple.

Suspended at the end of the barrel was a small shiny object. He kept his eye firmly on that object, never – not for a fraction of a second – looking at his feet or the swirling objects or the flashing lights or the sides of the barrel. He maintained his focus and his feet maintained their path.

~ Sometimes we might feel as though we are in a topsy-turvy situation.
~ We might find the going difficult
and be tossed around in our minds and our emotions.

~ We might feel at our wit’s end or as if we are being put through a wringer.
~ We might feel as though we are struggling against the stream
and sometimes, even going under.

Remember Peter?
He walked on water until he took his eyes off Jesus and saw the billowing waves of the sea and noted that the wind was boisterous.

His MIND possibly said, “What am I doing? I can’t walk on water!!!” and he began to sink.

Just as the owner of the barrel-ride – just as Peter – we need to FOCUS.
We need to “look unto Jesus” [Hebrews 12:2] and keep our full focus on Him.

We can walk unerringly and with complete confidence through the roughest turmoil when we keep our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus and not on ourselves, our circumstances or other people or things.

Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry out and the Lord hears,
and delivers them out of all their troubles.

Isaiah 41:10,13
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God.
I will strengthen you. I will help you.
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand,
saying to you, ‘Fear not. I will help you’

Are you under the circumstances?
Remember:

UNBELIEF puts our CIRCUMSTANCES
between US and GOD.

FAITH puts GOD
between US and our CIRCUMSTANCES.

And for those who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour,
this word is recorded by Isaiah
Look to ME and be saved. For I am God, and there is NO OTHER.

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

Wonderful post and as you’ve said to me before… you hit the nail on the head. Yes He is with us always, never to leave or forsake. Praise our Lord Jesus Christ and the Almighty Father for such love as to free from the bonds of sin as a GIFT… then to carry us through this life as a PROMISE.

The same Lord that we look to for salvation from God’s wrath, and then to give strength to help in time of need, is the same Lord that we look to come again and take us to be with Him for an eternity…. what grace He has, and will show to us!

    Titus 2:13 (KJV) 13) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Thanks for the wonderful posting reminding all of us of our need to look to Him in the past, present and future! Lord bless you my friend. Thank you for making this important truth so easily understood.

    • Yes, Rob – past, present and future.
While I wasn’t aware of it for the first 22 years of my life, He was there and He was in control, just as He has been for the last 54 years. He is with me right now and He will be with me for all eternity. I look to the future with joy and complete assurance. We are one day closer to His coming and it could be very soon.

As Jim Elliot wrote in his journal before being killed by Auca Indians:
“So live, that when you come to die, you have nothing left to do, but die”

How true, when the waves threaten to overwhelm us He steps in when He is invited, to say “Peace be still” and we are saved. How foolhardy, to give up, to depend on ourself when He is just standing by to bring peace to stormy situations beyond our control.

Another quality blog from Cloudwatcher. Thank you for reminding us who is the Master of life’s storms.

    • As you say “How foolhardy, to give up, to depend on ourself”.
We have all the resources of heaven at our disposal. We have the omnipotent God ‘at the ready’ to step in, hold out His hand and deliver us . . . and if we turn our backs on that help we are worse than fools. How idiotic to think I can handle things on my own!

On the other hand, when I turn to God, and focus on HIM, He undertakes and brings peace.
      What an amazing God!
