Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James 4:14
Today is Thursday 4 October, 2012. I am taking a pause with two deaths behind me and two funerals in front of me. What a memorable week it is going to be.
This past Monday, 1 October, 2012 my beloved cousin Daisy of 62 years went to be with the Lord and while I was at her wake on Tuesday night, news came of the sudden death of my sister-in-law’s father . He was 82 years. Her funeral will be this Friday and his funeral on Saturday. Their lives. like vapor. One moment they were with us, the next they were in the Lord’s presence. Were they ready to meet Him? No more time for them to catch up to do what they should have done. Were their hands empty or full with His love and fulfilling His purpose for them?
She was a beloved wife, a Christian mother who instructed her children in the ways of the Lord and a doting grandmother of three young grandchildren . More than that, she loved the Lord and as a schoolteacher, proved that in loving Him she could share His love with the children who played truant in school, had parents who were too busy to care because they had to earn hard-earned dollars for their families. She caught them in their struggles, cajoled and encouraged them, coached them to find their purpose in life, paid for their education, uniforms and lunches, without fanfare , shared the gospel message and showed them what love meant. She walked her talk they could see and they knew she was a prayer warrior on their behalf and for others. She loved the Word of God and by putting the Psalms she loved to music, sang them and in the process memorized them with family and friends and students. Her faith was so strong that when she was diagnosed with cancer, she steadfastly denied chemotherapy choosing rather to depend on the grace and mercy of the Lord to give her a life of dignity to the end and with the hope of His full healing. He granted the desire of her heart and accomplished full healing in the end when He welcomed her home. Her faith was steadfast to the end which came so fast, for only last week she was ministering to her husband who was in hospital undergoing his third chemotherapy session. One day of pain and morphine to relief the pain and the Lord took her in her sleep before she had to endure more suffering, and after her family had gathered for the last time with her in prayer and left her expecting to see her the next day. But she was not and the Lord took her that night.
It was a real privilege for me to spend much time with Daisy on her last day on this earth to read Psalm 91 repeatedly at her request and to pray with her in her pain. Psalm 116 indeed was her life’s testimony.
He was a care-free man of low education, who spent much time with his friends and was ingenious in earning his keep. Many years were spent not knowing the Lord, lost in tom foolery till in answer to his children’s prayer, one day the Lord arrested him and he came in penitence to the Lord. His last day was like any other, he had breakfast with his friend, bought the ingredients from the market nearby for his lunch for his maid to cook, ate his lunch, had a nap and was found by his grandson that late afternoon, gasping for breath. He went to be with the Lord in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. His life snuffed out before he could bid farewell to anyone.
What was life for them? We will hear at the wake sessions with two night memorial services and at their funeral no doubt. Were they ready? We shall hear for there will be no further opportunity to prove their love for Him on this earth. They had to answer His call for they were each given their measure of life and could not add one second more even if they wished.
How about you my friend? Are you ready to meet your maker? Should your life be snuffed out the next moment, where will you spend your eternity? Will you spend it in the wonderful presence of a loving Saviour and Lord and rejoicing with all the saints in glory or will you be forever damned in hell where there will be gnashing of teeth and anguish, and separated from the Lover of your soul? Take stock while it is day for you, for the day is far spent and the night will soon be at hand when you will no longer have the opportunity to walk your talk. What is your talk and belief?
God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation” 2 Corinthians 6:2. Has your day of salvation come for you when He has heard your prayer?
Or is He speaking to you today to yield to His call? He says to you “ ”Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” Hebrews 3:15. He reminds you “ ”My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh”. Genesis 6
“each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment” Hebrews 9:27
Are you ready my friend, for your judgment day? No one is ready unless they have Jesus Christ as their mediator between God and man. Jesus said “no man comes to the Father except by Me”.
He calls to you today ”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
For God so loved the world, I find it written
In verse sixteen, John’s Gospel chapter three
He gave His Son, Who was for sinners smitten
When nailed upon the Cross of Calvary
Such wondrous love! It passes human knowledge
For Jesus died that we might ever live
Eternal life, that none need ever perish
This life to all believing souls He now will give.
Will you accept life for all eternity or choose death for ever in hell? It is all up to you.
Choose you this day whom you will serve for it will determine your eternity.
Do write to me at email@example.com to tell me that you are accepting Jesus today as your Saviour and let me rejoice with you.
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling you today.
Postscript: the two lives were snuffed out from earth and entered into life eternal in heaven. Praise the Lord.. they chose Him before their early life was snuffed out. It can be the same for you.
