Psalm 17:10-12: They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance. 11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground. 12 They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.
Response : They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance . Their worldly prosperity puffs them up, and makes them insensible and obdurate against all reason and just fear; and the Scripture uses this term of a calloused heart in this sense, because the callous man has no feeling, and those that are callous are less subject to the passion of fear.
They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover Lions are not more greedy, nor their ways more cunning than are Satan and his helpers when engaged against the children of God. The blood of souls the adversary thirsts after, and all his strength and craft are exerted to the utmost to satisfy his detestable appetite. We are weak and foolish like sheep; but we have a shepherd wise and strong, who knows the old lion’s wiles, and is more than a match for his force; therefore will we not fear, but rest in safety in the fold. Let us beware, however, of our lurking foe; and in those parts of the road where we feel most secure, let us look about us lest, peradventure, our foe should leap upon us.
Father, help us follow you our Good Shepherd, and let us not go astray to our detriment. Be our protector from the wiles of the enemy as we rest secure in your love and care. Thank you for you watch over us 24 hours of every day for you neither sleep nor slumber. Amen.
