We all would love to walk closer to the Lord and as soon as we say that, we know that it is not easy to accomplish.
In order to walk closer with Him we are faced with the requirement that we must place Him above all else
Our families – He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matthew 10:37 In Luke 14:26, the wife is included.
Ourself – He that taketh not his cross and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. Matthew 10:38
It is much easier to relate to those we can see than with He whom we cannot see. Is not that faith? Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It takes faith to walk closer to the Lord. We must walk by faith and not by sight.
In giving ourselves to Him, there will be suffering for He calls us personally to take up our crosses. A cross signifies sacrifice and suffering just as He exemplified it.He gave His all and can we do less? It means that “I” must die. Am I willing to suffer hardship, be persecuted and be ridiculed and give up my “rights”? Paul mentioned this
“ Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
2 Timothy 3:12.
Can we accept and trust the words of He whom we cannot see more than those whom we can see? – our fellow earthlings who are so worldly minded and not heavenly minded?
It is no wonder that when the writer wrote the song Just a closer walk with Thee, there is a confession that we are so weak and we need the strength of the Lord, in order for us to follow closer to Him.
I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
And it is only through His grace and mercy that we will be able to walk closer to Him
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Yes, in this world we will have to suffer and even stumble and it is only the Lord who will be able to sustain us.
Through this world of toil and snares
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.
He will be the One who keeps us to the end and bring us safely to heaven. No we cannot do it on our own – only by His granting us grace and mercy will we make it to the end.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.
May His strength, mercy and grace flow to and through you as you aim to walk closer to Him today.
