The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. Ecclesiastes 5:12
I am fascinated with the subject of sleep because I know what it is to not be able to sleep and its consequences and I also know what it is to have just a few minutes of deep sleep and be totally refreshed, reenergised and to be inspired to continue to seize the opportunities of the day.
We know that not all our labour brings in the bread for us. Sometimes we have to slog it out and yet not win the day and we become dead tired to fall asleep even on the aeroplane, train, bus or car while going home. Sometimes it takes little effort to overcome a challenge and with not a care in the world we can fall asleep.
I have fallen asleep on aeroplanes before the plane take-off till the plane landed 4 hours later after a tough audit meeting. Fallen asleep in a car all the way from Sriracha to Bangkok airport. It was refreshing sleep. Some other times I have had just a 15 minutes shut-eye and woken up all ready to take a project on to the next lap. Yes, sleep is good.
However, have you heard of many rich who because of their wealth are afraid they will lose it and cannot sleep? This global world and speed of communications has not lessened their anxiety and in stead increased it for what happens at the New York Stock Exchange can influence what happens in NZ, Australian, HK, Singapore stock exchanges and a what we thought was safe securities could be wiped out at the stroke of an on-line financial news broadcast on CNBC, Bloomberg or Reuters.
Yes, I have not been able to sleep when I had too many unanswered questions on my mind, found it difficult to sleep even though I had everything else comfortable, tossing, turning trying to find that elusive knock-out sleep. What was I doing? Trying to become richer with investments and working harder! Have you had the same experience? Were your concerns for your family, for health, for property, for relationships matters? I have found that everything under His control is in control and vice versa.
May the Lord show us the right priorities in our lives so that we will know to let go when we should and let Him take control of our lives. Let us rather “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness”, let us “cast our cares on Him for He cares for us”, and let us remember that if He cares for the lilies of the fields and the birds of the air and knows how many hairs are on our heads, that we should let nothing deprive us of the beauty sleep which the Lord gives to His beloved.
Yes beauty sleep – to rest and not be frustrated, anxious, grumpy or in a bad mood but to be beautiful in character to display all the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, faith long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, temperance, meekness listed in Galatians 5:22 – to all who cross our path after that elusive sleep.
Yes be reminded to “Go to sleep” this afternoon, this evening when you need it no matter how brief… and rest and be blessed today.
