Doubt and uncertainty

For 24 years in the ministry one of the greatest hinderances I know of is doubt. Doubt does more damage to the faith and belief of man than the Devil himself. Where does doubt come from? What causes doubt? How can man get rid of doubt?

The human will is the part of man that chooses and decides. The will of man is governed by the natural state of man. The Bible says the ways of man are right in his own eyes. The will of man is in direct oppostion to the will of God. Unless the human will is “broken” man cannot believe in or accept Christ. So, how is the human will broken to the point of belief and trust in the person of Christ?

Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Through the Word the Holy Spirit ministers and breaks the heart of fallen man to a place of trust and belief. The broken will allows man to accept Christ as Saviour and Redeemer. Belief is man’s connection to the saving Grace of God. Unbelief is man’s separation from God’s saving Grace. Doubt and uncertainty can damage man’s belief and man’s connection to Christ. Thus causing man to yield to sin or disobedience to God.

The Bible terms doubt as wavering faith or uncertainty. The believer in Christ cannot be challenged with doubt, wavering faith, or uncertainty his whole life. Here’s why.

James 1:6-8…But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Double mindedness is harmful to the Christian walk. A doubting conscience causes man to sin or yield to sin. Double mindedness causes man to depart from the faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. James says in his epistle…

James 4:8…Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Heb 11:6…But without faith it is impossible to please him:

How miserable is a man with a heartful of doubt? How miserable is a man with an uncertain faith? The Devil isn’t even concerned about a man that doubts Christ because he knows this instability is enough to cause man to fall away. Doubt is dangereous and so is uncertainty.

Belief is one thing. Trusting and accepting is another…but the Bible says man can have a full assurance of faith.

Full assurance is in a man’s heart that is totally given. Full assurance is in man that’s sold out to God Almighty and immovable. Doubt has no place in the heart of man with full assurance. Full assurance is more than belief.

Full assurance comes when man’s heart is purified from self. All the human dross must be purified from the heart of man to be completely rid of doubt and uncertainty. Christ must be like a refiners fire. He must burn up all the the “chaff” in your heart to rid you completely from doubt and uncertainty.

Mal 3:2-3…for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver,

Matt 3:11-12…he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Sanctifying power is like fire from God. It burns up all the dross in the human soul. It rids the believer in Christ from self…that is the root of doubt and uncertainty. That’s why the Bible teaches heart purity. Not only to live holy but to have full assurance from within. Not doubtfulness. Not uncertainty. Full assurance.

When man becomes nothing Christ becomes everything. When Christ becomes everything you will become nothing but dust at the Saviour’s feet. Christ can purify the heart with fire. Christ can purge the human conscience from the guilt of sin. When man is rid of these selfish traits there is no room for doubt.

Heart purity is found in the Baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire. Heart purity from the still existing Adamic life is a place for doubt and uncertainty to arise. The following passage (if examined closely) will comfirm heart purity found in the Baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire. Read it closely. Read it with understanding these people were already saved as God was offering “more” to the believer. This more is “heart purity” from the Adamic life that is the root for doubt, unbelief, and uncertainty. Peter was speaking of his own experience with the Baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire…not the new birth.

Acts 15:7-9…And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Their hearts were purified fom all the dross that still exists in the heart and life of a believer. The best way to get rid of doubt and uncertainty is to be purged from it. How? With the sanctifying power of God found in the Baptism with the Holy Ghost and Fire.

  1. ptl2010 says:

Amen… Oh for faith to trust Him more! If we can only believe, how much more and dearer the Lord will be to those of us who love Him. What love, blessings we miss because our focus is misplaced on the outcome rather than Giver! Just to know Him more is truly our reward for believing more. May our prayer be “Lord, please help our unbelief that we may know Thee and the power of Thy resurrection.”
Thank you RickRoehm for posting this blog.. may others who read this be blessed as I have been.

  2. One again, thank you Brother Rick! Direct and insightful.

To bring this down to the simple level I can understand, as you said, it is NOT belief… even the demons believe… it is unwavering FAITH!

    Shalom, Art
