New Year Resolutions or Covenants…

It’s that time of year again. Time to look forward to 2011, to make plans and commitments.

Many of us prepare for the new year by making new year resolutions. By far the most common (I don’t say popular) is to lose weight. I need to do that. I also need to do a much better job with the laundry hamper. Our resolutions cover the tremendously important to the niggly little things in our lives.

Most of our new year resolutions quickly fall to the wayside. That’s an interesting phenomenon. Why?

Is it that we aren’t really that serious about them? Is it that we don’t establish any accountability? Is it that we don’t have the inner strength to follow through? Probably a bit of each.

This year I’m not doing new year resolutions. Instead, I will be establishing covenants with God on some really significant things I need to do with my life. A covenant is a contract, with obligations and penalties. A covenant establishes accountability. I find I need that accountability.

I will also be making or renewing vows with my wife and family. A vow, like a covenant, is also a contract… in this case made with God as a witness.

I expect much greater success this year than I have in years where I made new year resolutions. God is a pretty powerful incentive!

Shalom,
Art
