There Goes Crazy Old Simeon… The 8th Day

As two merchants prepared their wares in the plaza, they spied an old man scurrying toward the Temple.

“There goes crazy old Simeon. Wonder what’s got him in such a rush today?”

“He’s probably hearing messages from God again. You know Simeon, he’s had God whispering in his ear for more years than I can remember.”

*Laughter* “Yeah, just like my angel at home whispers in my ear. That’ll be the day.”

The merchants shook their heads as old Simeon rushed into the Temple. “Time for the High Priest to put the old coot out to pasture if you ask me.”

And the merchants returned to their work, business as usual.

In the Temple, this would be anything but business as usual. Simeon was not supposed to be on duty today. But the Holy Spirit had called on him. “Rush to the Temple. You have a duty to perform for The Father. It is as He has promised.”

Simeon was not a person of renown. He did not occupy a position of high responsibility in the Temple. He was a simple man of deep faith, of the Tribe of Levi, a Temple priest. But this simple priest had been called upon by the Holy Spirit.

25And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. (Luke 2:25-26 KJV)

Simeon had been telling others about the visit by the Holy Spirit for years. As a priest, he knew what the prophets had said about a coming Messiah. He had been waiting, anxiously.

And those around him thought he was just “hearing voices,” an old man losing his marbles.

This was the 8th day. As commanded in Genesis and Leviticus, the boy child was to be presented for circumcision. The six-mile walk from Bethlehem had been difficult for the new mother. And after paying their taxes and the costs of their journey, they had only a pair of birds to offer in sacrifice.

23(As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. (Luke 2:23-24 KJV)

As Simeon preformed his priestly duties, he raised this song to God:

28Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. (Luke 2:28-32 KJV)

And, as with all the events in her life relating to this child, the mother treasured Simeon’s words and pondered them in her heart.

Simeon… a lowly priest, a man of no renown. Simeon, who dedicated this child who was to change the world to God, could now die in peace.
