Tough Issues of Christianity: Spiritual Gifts

An area of great confusion for Christians and even greater debate among Christians is the topic of Spiritual Gifts. The Apostle Paul speaks extensively about the topic of Spiritual Gifts in 1 & 2 Corinthians, Ephesians and Romans as well as elsewhere.

There is much talk in churches and among Christians about the need to “return to the fundamentals” as we progress on our Christian Journey. These fundamentals are found in God’s Word, the Holy Bible.

So, unlike some of the other blogs in this “Tough Issues of Christianity” series, this one is not going to present much information. Instead, it’s going to call for some homework.

According to various sources, the Bible lists between nine and 21 unique Spiritual Gifts. I have some questions about them. If you choose to respond to any (or all) of these tough questions, remember that this series IS NOT intended as a place for debate, but discussion of topics important to our faith. This is a topic where strong differences in views are deeply held. Be respectful of the views of others as you respond. Use Biblical references to support strongly held views. Seek to build and edify.

Some questions about Spiritual Gifts:

What are Spiritual gifts and how are they different from the Gift of the Spirit?

List the Spiritual Gifts.

Do all Christians receive Spiritual Gifts? If so, do all receive any particular gift(s). do we receive all of them?

How do we receive Spiritual Gifts?

How are Spiritual Gifts different from (God-given) talent? (If different at all)

How does one recognize that they have received a Spiritual Gift?

How do we know which Spiritual Gift(s) we have received?

Can we “turn down” a Spiritual Gift?

Your responses are greatly appreciated.

Shalom,
Art

The gift of the Holy Spirit:
“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal…But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 11-12

This Holy Spirit gift is described in 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
