It’s Super Bowl weekend, arguably the biggest sporting event in the US each year.
Thousands are flocking to ice-bound Dallas. Super markets are selling party trays and libations by the truck load.
A well known ticket broker reports that the average price of tickets on the secondary market is $3,600, up 50% over last year.
And we wait breathlessly for the Super Bowl ads.
It’s time to PARTY and INDULGE!
As we watch the Super Bowl ads, we will be entertained… and seduced.
To achieve happiness in life, all we need to do is:
Eat this type of chip.
Drink this kind of beer.
Get a new job.
Yada, yada, yada…
This event with all its trappings represents much of our human condition in affluent countries today. The rock band Queen said it well:
Monday few of us will be happier because of the Super Bowl and those who are will find that it is short lived.
I’m going to watch this game with a group of friends. My wife and I will enjoy it.
But happiness? We’ll seek that elsewhere. And we’ll celebrate and worship Him Sunday morning and honor Him in all that we do.
