“1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:1-3 KJV)
Jesus read these words from the scroll to begin His ministry. He was telling the Jews in His hometown of Nazareth both Who He is and what His mission would be. His message was rejected.
Jesus did not become flesh to get people into the church but to get the church (Kingdom) into the world. He called us to SERVE!
Instructing His disciples, past and present, Jesus has the Three “Greats:”
The Great Requirement:
‘He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require
of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with
thy God?” (Micah 6:8 KJV)
Were are to act justly with our fellow-man.
We are to love with mercy and to grant mercy.
We are to live humbly.
It is not enough to merely love God, to contemplate and study His word.
We are to go into the world and DO! We are to serve as He serves.
The Great Commandment:
“34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35 KJV)
We are to DO love, agape. Agape is not an emotion or feeling, it is action. Therefore, agape is a choice.
The Great Commission:
“18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20 KJV)
We are not supposed to stay cloistered in our homes and churches. We are not to restrict our associations to just others of like mind. We are to GO out into the world to serve. And not just to our local community, but to all people in all nations.
Just imagine what we can do… if we just follow the Three Greats!
My thanks to Pastor Michael whose sermon this morning is the basis for this message.
