There was a man who was running late for a very important business meeting. He drove several times around the block trying to find a parking spot. Finally, his last hope, he said: “Lord, get me to this meeting in time and I promise I will go to church every Sunday!”
He’d no more than finished saying this than a parking spot opened right in front of the building where his meeting was. As he pulled into the parking spot, he said: “Never mind, Lord. I’ve got it covered.”
This story reminds me of the Parable of the Ten Lepers:
|Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy
11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus feet and thanked him… and he was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:11-19)
Of the ten healed, only one gave glory and thanks to Jesus. The other nine, joyful in their success, went on with their lives.
In the next paragraphs of Luke 17, Jesus talks about the coming of the kingdom of God. All ten of the lepers were offered the kingdom. Only one accepted.
How often are we like the nine, or the man running late to a meeting? Or how often do we receive blessing from God… then go right on with our merry little lives, never giving thanks, never even giving it a thought.
All things come from God.
