Dim Sum – We elect for the future

Singapore is all abuzz with the most competitive elections ever since its independence. Never in the history of Singapore have the Opposition parties been able to raise so many potential high calibre competitive candidates as the ruling party has been offering in the past. Many Singaporeans will be given the opportunity to vote, a right they have not been able to exercise since independence, because the ruling party had been returned unopposed for lack of competitive Opposition candidates.

Who Singaporeans elect on May 7, 2011 to represent them in the government will affect the Singapore of the future. Singaporeans must choose to stay with the ruling party which has been instrumental in building up Singapore, or vote the Opposition for more voice in the government especially as the future continues to be more complex in every aspect.

Similarly spiritually as Christians, the decisions we make will affect our future. However, there is the difference that the impact of spiritual decisions will last forever, and not only till the next election in five years’ time.

When we choose to accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord it affects how we live, we choose to live victoriously over any setback in our lives because we live in the confidence that He knows the way – He is our personal Guide. Our choice will not always keep us on the mountain tops, but we have the assurance that He goes through the valleys with us and He will lead us out of the valleys in His time.

When we choose to live above the world and its call, and to respond to heaven’s call, we will live our lives in pursuit of the things that matter for eternity, and not focus on the temporal. Has He not promised that we will become joint-heirs with Christ in Romans 8:17? “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together.” The eternal riches of Christ will more than compensate the riches of this world.

We will choose to be like Jesus and develop our character with evidence in good works which glorify God. When we choose the way of the world, we will choose to do good works so that others may see our good works and glorify us. The difference is for the former, good works result from Christ-like character and for the latter, good works are the motivations which result in self glorification and pride.

As Christians, we have the inward assurance of sins forgiven and hope of eternal life because Christ sacrificed Himself for us as He was the only one who was qualified to pay for our sins and He arose on the third day to ever live on the right hand of the Father making intercession for His children. Not so with those who choose to work for their salvation, who have no eternal hope through good works, sacrifices, penance because God set the rules and requirements for salvation from sin – all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and the wages of sin is death. There is none righteous no not one, none whose blood is efficacious enough to pay the penalty for our sins except the Son of God. Yes, no more do we have to offer sacrifice recurringly with animals or birds, for they are not acceptable since Jesus Christ paid the penalty once and for all, the Sinless for the sinful.

Have you elected for your future and eternity? Choose the only Way which leads to life eternal through Jesus Christ. Choose a victorious, purposeful life on this earth for yourself, choose Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Pray for Singapore that the people whom the Lord approves will be voted into power on 7 May, 2011, and may Singapore continue to permit religious freedom, be a lighthouse for Jesus in the ASEAN region and be the missionary sending centre for Asia in the years to come.
