Nobodies Into Somebodies

Ary Scheffer: The Temptation of Christ, 1854

Paul’s whole thrust in his first letter to the believer at Corinth was, “I’m not coming to you with brilliance or human wisdom, and I’m certainly not coming to you with any kind of impressive physique or profound philosophy. Instead, I come in the power of God. And there’s a good reason for that.” Note carefully how Paul put it:

For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. 1st Corinthians 1:26-31)

Take a good look, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest” among you, not many influential, not many from high society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses; chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have, right thinking and right living, a clean slate and fresh start comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying, “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.”

When we are nothing, He is everything. When we come to the end of ourselves, God is there to lift us up in His own time and fashion. Praise the Lord, He never forsakes us. In due time we shall reap if we faint not. From nobodies He lifts us to be somebodies for Him… only Him… gently in love.
