Nomination day was 17 August 2011 There are 4 candidates. 27 August, 2011 will be the Election Day for the new Singapore President.
Please pray that the Lord’s choice will be the new Elected President that there may be continued peace and harmony in Singapore, not only among the races and religions but also between the Presidency and the recently elected government.
Being a very small nation state compared to the other countries, it is imperative that there is co-operation between the Elected Presidency and the government which is the executive arm of the national administration. The current Constitution limits the President’s role to certain functions to protect the reserves of the land, so that past national financial reserves are not dipped into frivolously, critical appointments to the judicature, military, appointment of the Prime Minister (the leader among the elected cabinet) and the rights of people under the Internal Security Act as well as anti-corruption. The Elected President represents the face of Singapore to the outside world and is a unifying force in the land. It is to him that the credentials of envoys of foreign countries present their papers.
The new expectations of the Presidency by some people are for expanded powers for the Presidency which require that the National Constitution be changed under statute by Parliament. May the people of Singapore have the wisdom to vote with their heads rather than their hearts i.e. soberly and not reactionary, for that Elected President who is most qualified in character and experience to perform the Elected President’s responsibilities for the long term good of Singapore rather than for one who hankers for the short-term popular non-Constitutional and inappropriate demands of the minority or the opposition political movement.
May God intervene in the hearts of men to cause only His choice to be voted in and we pray in accordance to
1 Timothy 2:1-4 I exhort therefore, that first of all supplications, prayers, intercession, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable to the sight of God our Saviour, who will have all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
May all Singaporeans exercise their right to vote after
– having ascertained their citizenship and are registered to vote
– taking the time to study the voting records and lifestyles of candidates
– identifying which candidates most closely follow Bible standards
– setting apart some time to pray about who would make the best leader
– studying the propositions
– considering how to vote “for” or “against” an issue affecting God’s plans for the people of Singapore
Then, most importantly…THEY MUST VOTE – not spoil their vote or give their vote to those who are against working out the plans of God. Yes each must vote and exercise their right to freedom and democracy and not stay away from voting.
May the Lord’s will be done in Singapore on 27 August, 2011 and His candidate be empowered to act for all Singaporeans.
