Let’s examine the word’s of Christ who lived under the Law of Moses…before the death, burial, and resurrection.
Luke 10:25-37…And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
Notice Jesus asked, “What is written in the Law?” The Law of Moses was called the Torah. The Torah consists of the first five books of the Bible. Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Dueteromony, and Leviticus. Then He asked, “How readest thou?”
Then the Lawyer answered…And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
Then Jesus responded…And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. Eternal life was granted to the Jewish people that “kept” the Law of Moses. They were to be obedient to all the statutes and ordinances that God ordained. Even Jesus said so. Notice the words of James (the Lord’s brother)…For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Loving God showed a Jewish man’s subjection to God’s Law and commandments. Loving people also showed a Jewish man’s obedience to God’s Law and commandments.
Jesus told this man he had answered right. All the lawyer had to do was obey God’s Law with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his strength, and with all his mind. This kept the Jewish Brethren in perfect harmony with God. If man did this he was granted Eternal Life. Then Jesus responded…And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
The problem was they didn’t have the blessing of Divine Grace in the Church like we do today. The minstry of the Holy Spirit was not given yet. The power of the Gospel was not released yet from Heaven. The veil in the Temple had not been rent in twain. The New Testament with greater promises and Blessings had not come in yet. But, Eternal life was still avaiable to our Jewish Brethren under Law. Jesus said so..Then Jesus responded…And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
The two passages Jesus referred to in the Law were…
Duet. 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18.
I’m just glad God extended a better way for us in the power, presence, and person of Jesus Christ..who died, was buried, and resurrected from the Grave.
