Expatriate living has its many challenges. Thank God for the opportunity to encourage and learn from my friends who once used to be my Sunday School students and are today’s expatriates. They used to learn about the Lord from me in Sunday School . Now I am learning from them about how they are applying what they learnt to face the difficult challenges of life in the strength of the Lord, with no family or friend networks to lend local support in foreign lands.
Recently my friend, a Singaporean had to enrol her 6-year-old son into a local school in her host country, where it is necessary for her son to learn “hanyu pinyin” Chinese. She was in a quandary as she was rusty in the subject and felt incompetent to help her son. She needed to be reminded of the basics in order to help her son. The Lord most graciously provided her with a local neighbour tuition teacher, who because of proximity of her home location, could come to my friend’s home in stormy gale or sunshine, to teach her son. It was nearly two months ago when the lessons began and she dutifully sat through the lessons with her son.
Today, she wrote me about another lesson she is learning from the Lord – “sometimes the Lord provides the kick-start and requires us to carry on” and this came with the news that the tuition teacher can no longer carry on teaching. She expressed disappointment, but rejoiced that the timely revision of the basics of hanyu pinyin in the last two months, is enabling her to carry on coaching her son at his level.
My response to her was “The Lord is in control and He is Jehovah Jireh. He provided a tuition teacher when one was needed to help her and her son . Today, the Lord will provide her with wisdom and strength for her to be her son’s tuition teacher, and being a blessing to him. In sharing her insight with me, she is multiplying her blessing to others on ChristianBlessings. ”
As I read about the application of the truth in Scriptures, it is noted that the Lord has often prepared His channels of blessings in His special way, for the responsibilities He had for them to fulfil. Talk about Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Queen Esther, Ruth, and we have a whole list of expatriates who were equipped in foreign lands to later be blessings to their families and their host countries.
Perhaps, you have been called to a temporary place within your home country but far from family and friends, to kickstart your development for the country promised to you in faith. You may not know what is immediately ahead of you, but you know you are pursuing your inheritance in heaven and being equipped for that time.
Sometimes we find ourselves in a temporary place or situation , not where we belong. It is not the place we want to be, not if we had our choice, but being where God wants us to be is the best place now. If we understand that it is just temporary, and that we have hope for a brighter tomorrow and we will be in the best place finally as He promised, then we can carry on in His strength, not our own. We shall make it with Him in the midst of changes in scenery, homes and peoples. He is with us if we want Him to be there, and He will be our Tower of strength and Keeper. It will be all right whatever our situation. Our insecurities lie within ourselves. There is security in Jesus Christ. He is the way to eternal security. He tells us truly. He will be with us through life’s changes and situations. No fear. He is here with us. He knows the way when we do not.
Jesus said “Lo I am with you always even to the end of the world.”
We are all pilgrims in this land called earth. We are expatriates if we have heaven as our eternal home. The Lord equips us to be blessings and often kickstarts our development for us to carry on to full measure to fulfil His plans for our lives, to our families and for heaven.
So if you feel challenged and strained, be encouraged today. We are journeying to our homeland and we are being prepared for it. He is in control. He knows the way. He will bring us safely to our destination, fully equipped to enjoy and be a blessing there.
“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should later receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he went.” Hebrews 11.:1
Heavenly Father, I appreciate You for your “just in time kick-starts” in my life. Thank You for the strength to carry on. As my Jehovah Jireh, You have provided everything I need. Thank You in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
