The Lord saves our souls and He wants to renew our minds.
The Lord wants to renew our minds which the Bible describes as “depraved” to do things which are not proper Rom. 1:28 , minds set on the flesh Rom. 8:5,7, haughty – Rom. 12:16 , unbelieving II Cor. 4:4 , “minds led astray from simplicity and purity to Christ” II Cor. 11:3, “alienated and hostile in mind”Col. 1:21 “inflated without cause ” -Col. 2:18 .
Listen to this message
Our minds have been filled with beliefs, thoughts, ideas, opinions, convictions, prejudices that we have concerning ourselves, others, objects, activities, God, etc., taught and learnt from our parents, educational system society (books, television, movies, etc.), religious training, from our reflections through personal observation, experience and compromise which have been tampered by fleshly “personal interest” of selfishness and sinfulness, perrsonal aspiration, gratification, reputation and in our reactions of fight, fright or flight.
What will renewal of our mind involve?
Initial renewal – regenerative renewal by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5) who gives us the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16), puts His laws in our hearts (Heb. 8:10; 10:16) and continuing and sanctifying renewal by us having the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5), focussing on what is true, right, pure (Phil 4:8), and on things above (Col 3:2).
When our thoughts are manifested in Godly behaviour, our minds are energised (Prov. 23:7, IPet. 1:13. We will have changed mindsets with regard to ourselves, our identity relative to others’ expectations, guilt with regard to worthlessness and inferiority, about other people and our self conscious response to please them, from vain imaginations of fears and phobias, attitutudes to anger, impatience, hate, bitterness, resentment, revenge, suspicion, criticism, jealousy, unforgiveness, blame, depression, co-dependency, about things and materialism – “what am I going to buy next?”, to loving things and using people, addictions to substances and objects, of ideas in the quest for knowledge, desire to be correct, accurate, right all the time, about situations on what might happen, worry, panic about inability to cope , about God that He is irrelevant and unnecessary today and inordinate yearning for safety and security.
Do we want a renewal of our minds?
Then we need to
1. To adopt God’s attitudes to purity, righteousness, love, joy in accord with the
our newness of life in Jesus Christ – Rom. 6:4, newness of the Spirit – Rom. 7:6, our
new covenant – Heb. 8:8,13 , a new and living way – Heb. 10:20 because we are new creatures in Christ – II Cor. 5:17,Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10
2. Accept God’s revelation of Himself in nature – “the heavens declare the glory of God…”
Ps. 19:1,2 , “the Son will reveal Him” Lk. 10:22 and explain Him John 1:18.
3. Read the Word for Biblical revelation II Tim. 3:16 – “all Scripture is inspired by God”
4. Recognise His personal revelations to us individually – Phil. 3:15 “God will reveal it to you, ” Rom. 14:5 – “let each man be fully convinced in his own mind”
5. Have personal discipline to renew Godly established attitudes. I Tim. 4:7 – “discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness” not by self effort but by allowing God to change us with the exercising of our minds on His thoughts. Prov. 16:3 – “your thoughts shall be established” Isa. 26:3 – “the steadfast of mind Thou wilt keep in perfect peace”
Positive action is required not passivity – not an idle mind – daydreaming, procrastinating, wasting time, fantasizing but a mind set on God’s character and His ways – Phil. 4:8 – “whatever is true, right, pure…let your mind dwell on these…”, Col. 3:2 – “set your mind on things above. We need a “mind-set” that spontaneously thinks of God and His activity
saying “Yes, Lord” against temptation, for worship, enjoying His joy – Phil. 4:4; I Thess. 5:16 and laughter – Prov. 15:13; 17:22 with songs in our hearts – Eph. 5:19 and love for others – Rom. 5:5; Jn. 13:34. We need the accompaniment of Godly transformation of behaviour – Rom. 12:2, not in conformity with external forces which hinder behavioral transformation Col. 2:20-23.
When accomplished, based on spiritual regeneration and becoming a “new man” in Christ, the Christian has the indwelling spiritual sufficiency to engage in the renewing of the mind that allows for divinely empowered Christian behavior – Eph. 4:23; Col. 3:10. Praise the Lord.
There is not one of us that escapes this need for the renewing of our minds. May He convict us and energise us to obey Him, His Word and the ministering of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Dear Lord, please renew our minds and transform our lives that we become living sacrifices and examples of Your love to the lost. In Jesus’ Name we ask. Amen.
