Are you a Christian? Why?:

To-Do

Are you a Christian? Why? What is your purpose, reason or goal for being a Christian?

Let’s examine this all-important question, beginning with a simple definition of what a Christian is:

Very simply, a Christian is a follower or disciple of Jesus Christ. So, why assume this label? Why be a Christian?

Some would answer that they are Christian in order to attain salvation and eternal life. Certainly, this is one of the greatest benefits of being a Christian, but if it is the reason for being Christian we are missing the point.

For some others, being Christian means leading a righteous life, avoiding sin and separation from God. Laudable, to be sure, but again missing the point.

Jesus gave us His guidance, His instructions, on what it means to be a Christian. This is to be our reason, our purpose He did so in two instances:

The Great Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, Of all the commandments, which is the most important?29 The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:28-31)

The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Mark 28:16-20)

Truly being Christian is not about what we get from it, it’s all about what we do with it. Love, Christian love, is not an emotion, it’s action. Spreading the Good News is achieved through deed as well as word.

Being a Christian is not about the future or our status with God, it’s all about doing what Jesus would have us do… today.

True. It is about what we do with our belief and it is for action today.
What we do today will lead to what and where we will be tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and family Art – thank you for all you are doing here.
