Audit Fri Sat 069

Image via Wikipedia An audit meeting

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18. Watch it!

I was young once, full of promise after graduation with 4 job offers – 3 from banks and one from an audit firm – I chose the least paying one for  potential work exposure to various industries and levels of management and perhaps  you can guess which it was.

First job on the audit – to me a young punk of a graduate – presumed “know all” –  was a jolt to reality. I was thrown into the deep end and was made a “leader” of a team of real “professionals” with many years of experience in audit, who had risen through the ranks with good brains and  curious nature. In the Asian context, they  had eaten more salt than I had eaten rice. They did not have to say much, I knew who was the “boss” during the audit meetings with auditees. It taught me humility I have carried with me all my years through thick and thin – a very valuable lesson for the inexperienced to learn, without which I have seen many shed tears of pain and loneliness, bitterness and unforgiveness.

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.” Hebrews 12:7

This is another difficult Bible verse about humility. How quick we often are to run from hardship and pray to God to deliver us from it. It takes a lot of humility to go through hardship and be thankful to God that He is disciplining us for our own good like any good father does with his child. Having this kind of mentality requires a completely different shift in how we view God. Most of us view God as a counselor, a supporter, a giver of good gifts, and God is definitely all of those things. Have we not heard that that God is more interested in our character than in our happiness? It is joy not just happiness He wants us to have, our surroundings notwithstanding. God wants to bless us with good things, there is no doubt of that. Yes, God is more interested in blessing us with character than He is with material things. God is more interested that we become wise, content, humble, and loving than  that we become financially free and independent.

Be careful of pride – skids, falls are the order of the day.  Bruises, cuts, broken bones would result with healing required. Pray for staying power to learn from hardship.

I would rather not fall. I would rather grow in character to be more like Him.

What about you?

  1. Humility or humbleness is a quality of being courteously respectful of others. Friendships and marriages are dissolved over angry words. Resentments divide families and co-workers. Prejudice separates race from race and religion from religion. Reputations are destroyed by malicious gossip. Greed puts enmity between rich and poor. Wars are fought over arrogant assertions.

Hebrews 12:7 tells us we are members of His family, heirs with Christ. Therefore, we bear the burdens, duties and responsiblities of heirs along with the richness of His Blessings!

Very good advice, we must all learn to walk with God in humility.
Seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God…this is in Casting Crowns song Courageous. Love this line in that song.
Paraphrase of Micha 6:8 …To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
