If you make my word your home… John 8:31 (NJB)

If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples. (John. 8:31 New Jerusalem Bible)

As Christians, many of us emphasize the need to base our faith and all that follows on scripture. In my view it is unfortunate that many do not. They take only a portion of scripture, ignoring the rest. Or they take things out of context, interpreting it to serve their own needs and not that of God. We see it all the time. It becomes false teaching, leading people astray from the Will of God.

Jesus could not have spoken more plainly. In the NIV, this is interpreted as : “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples.” (John 8:31 NIV) He is The Way.

This is followed by a much better known verse: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32 NIV) He is the truth.

We are taught that life, Christian life, is not the existence we have on earth. That existence is temporary. Spiritual life, eternal life, comes through the grace of God, made possible by the blood sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the cross. He is the life.

“I AM the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) The Great I AM. “I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14) “Hear (Shema), O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

The Word! The Word is scripture. The Word is Christ Jesus. The Way, the Truth, the Life… found in the Word.

“No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

In the Word we find life; real, eternal life.

What a wonder, what a blessing it is to be:

ALIVE in The Word

Amen! We need to hear the Word, and read the Word…all of it including the parts we don’t always want to hear. The truth is not always pretty, but it is nontheless still the truth.
