Are you parched? Quench your thirst with living water.

For the past few days it’s been hot in eastern Missouri. We seem to have skipped winter and early spring has come like a blast furnace. This followed a week or so when we’d had rain in abundance. I think the hardware stores had sold out of cubit sticks for those considering building large boats.

Where I work, we’ve been selling a lot of liquids. Cases of coke in all brands and flavors have been flying off the shelves. In fact, anything that splashes has been selling like crazy.

So, this got me to thinking about this combination of heavy, endless rain followed by parching heat. How many of us do this in our spiritual lives. We “catch the Spirit” and spend a time drowning ourselves in spirituality. Then we move into a dry spell. And we know this sort of dry spell can get hot! And for a very long time.

So, how do we keep from becoming parched, spiritually? We don’t do it by spurts and dashes. We do it by making intentional decisions to worship and stay in communion with God. We can all find a zillion and 23 reasons to not do this. “I’ll do my devotional reading later. I have to hurry to (fill in the blank) right now.” “I don’t have time to pray right now, I’m facing a crisis.” “I’d just don’t seem to have the time to go to worship services. It meets at the prime tee times or when I can breakfast with friends.” “Eight o’clock is just too early for me to get up. I do that all week and I need my rest on weekends.” “The games are on Sunday.” “I don’t get anything out of the sermons, so why go?” I could use my full complement of words on these sort of excuses. But you already know the picture.

When we do not intentionally maintain and nurture our relationship with God, we become spiritually parched.

Christ Jesus promised us the living water. It’s there. It’s always available. The supply is endless and eternal.

Don’t be like the proverbial horse, led to the water… but not taking the drink…

Shalom,  Art

Just as H2O is needed to replenish our biological cells, the Living Water of Jesus is needed to replenish our spiritual cells. But we must drink of it, bowing over in humility to drink properly (it seems to me!), or will not receive quenching. I am also put in mind of that wonderful passage from the Psalms: “My heart panteth for Thee, O Lord; as the hart panteth after the waterbrook.” Just so.
