Many people feel so comfortable in a church which they have attended for many years. They have warmed the pews and sung the hymns from hymnals or learnt by heart. They listen to messages that do not even tickle their ears, these go through one ear and out the other without a pause in between. No longer are the messages speaking to hearts for they are good comfort for staying put.. no churning in the spirit just a lullaby on a Sunday morning in good airconditioning. No action asked for , for the messages were just to salve the conscience that they had “heard” the Word… never mind not responding. The people have come to say Hi! and Bye! to one another, not to worship the Lord in reverance and a thankful heart. There is passivity all round until the Benediction is said, then a rush to the exit and soon a jam right from church entrance to the gate – who will be first out of the gate? No wonder, even the pastor thinks of leaving if he has an alternative for he has not fulfilled God’s purpose for him.
What relevance are the messages when they do not merit action to higher plane or to evangelism to touch the hearts around? What reverence for the God who waits for His children’s worship and praise when half the congregation do not sing and if they do it is mouthing the words penned long ago which perhaps have become outmoded?
Why do people go to such churches? No wonder attendance is dropping for there is no edifying and praise in worship of the God who loves us. Why do people keep on coming ? Because they have a void to fill which the message does not fill. Because they have to keep appearances or explain to their children why dad and mom are not going to church.
Faith Child if you find yourself as above described, you need to move out of that church and attend a church that will bring life to your spirit and propel you to higher heights in God or seriously initiate action by prayer and supplication with others who really love the Lord, to make a change. Don’t just mouth your worship, don’t just warm that pew.. for you have been born for something more… found in Colossians 1:
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[e] 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.
Be all that you can be, to His glory and find relevance in His Word. God has not called you to be an irreverent dozer in church.
