Faith Child – Don’t Stick out your tongue

When you visit your doctor and he is from the old school, he would ask you to stick out your tongue. I cannot fathom what he sees when almost immediately I withdraw my tongue but it satisfies him and he nods.

What do people see when you stick out your spiritual tongue? It is not a funny face but the consequences could be disastrous if not careful.

Matthew 12:36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

James 3:6-12  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.  For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.  Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?  Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

Proverbs 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.

Let us be mindful of what escapes from our mouth, let  us have controlled tongues

James 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

Psalm 39:1  A psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.”

Proverbs 13:3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

Micah 7:5 Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with her who lies in your embrace be careful of your words.

Psalm 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.

May this be the constant prayer of our hearts

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Just a wonderful way to teach about watching over our tongues, for these young people. Perfect!

Evelyn, Thank you so much for this reminder. I have been in trouble before for speaking when I should have kept my tongue. In fact, I damaged one of my good relationships at church because a relatively new man in our church became offended when I said something to him I shouldn’t have. It took awhile for that relationship to mend. In fact, my pastor gave me a word shortly after this happened (I think the man talked with my pastor) He said, “Steve, I want you t write this principle in the front of your Bible and remember it, ‘Think before you speak.’ ” I have always thought his word to me came as a result of me popping off when I shouldn’t have.
Your post and wisdom here are exceptional. Thank you again for the prompting. God bless you.

Thank you for your sharing Steve. Yes I too have been reminded as a child that I have one pair of ears to listen and just one mouth to speak and that means I should listen more than speak. Tough lessons have been learnt… still sometimes we need to speak up to take a stand for the right, to explain or clarify, to communicate, to reconcile. Other times pray the Lord help us not to speak out of turn or gossip or even mind other’s business when we should be minding our own.
Have a great week ahead with the Lord’s blessings. Godspeed. .
