Encounters With Students: Yuck Ba To Retake Exams?

Had a chance to encourage some students to finish strong this afternoon at Elevate Makati. While sharing, I suddenly, unplanned, said these words…

Special exams are special because you’re special.

Oh well. I was encouraging them about running the race like winning the prize. Then I talked about those who took special exams because they failed the first time. That there’s grace for those who fail at some point. But given a chance, they’d rather not resort to special exams. So, of course, I had to ‘bawi’ or make up on that. Hence, the sudden statement.

But it makes sense. Jesus came to seek and save what was lost. He came to give chances to those who keep failing and failing and failing… and his response is grace… grace… grace.

I failed Physics three times in college. Never did I pass it. I was having ACES at my major subjects but Physics. The last time I took it I still failed. Thank God for His miracles, teacher decided to give us grace. I needed point zero something to pass. I’m not proud of this fact but I can tell people honestly that it was God who backed me up.

So is it not cool to retake exams? It’s a matter of perspective. To me, it’s alright as long as you can, with all honesty, say to God, “I did everything I could there was nothing left that I could have done.”

So for those who finished with their semester and school year, my prayer is that you did it perfect–that there was nothing you could have done because you did everything you could.

Now go and be excellent. Run your academic race like you’re winning the prize. No fails if possible. If di gid kaya sa imong kakayahan, if you really can’t, don’t be too hard on yourself. As long as you did EVERYTHING you could, that’s pleasing to God.

Run well the race, dear students! I was a physics major in college for two years, until I started winning writing contests! I sequed into technical English and never looked back, until I was finally able to retire and return to writing every day for the first time since my children were still growing up. Like you encouraging these students to just do their best and leave the rest to God, my adult children last September inspired and prodded me into writing and blogging and social networking–doing my best and trusting in God for the rest! Wonderful way to live and to run all our life’s races!

One of the best things about being a Christian is found in this verse:
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand. Psalm 37:24
To know that God holds our hands in the midst of seeming failure is to know He is in control and can make it right again for us who love Him, for His plans always will finally turn out for our good.

“…For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…”
    Jeremiah 29:11
So do not stumble or run away from God… run to Him in your confusion, pain and misery. He knows what to do, when you do not.
