No matter how hard I try to figure things out and understand life. . .
I don’t know why my best friend had to die in a car crash.
I don’t know why my 16-year-old daughter is living on the streets.
I can’t understand why I’m sad most of the time.
I don’t understand why my husband can’t stop gambling.
I can’t understand why my sister continues to let her husband abuse her.
I don’t understand why we can never seem to pay all our bills.
I don’t know why I don’t feel accepted and loved.
I can’t understand why my husband can’t find a job.
I don’t understand why my dad needs a boyfriend.
But God does.

I don’t know why some states legalize same-sex marriages.
I can’t understand why some Protestants think Catholics are not going to heaven.
I can’t understand why people who call themselves Christians could be on opposite sides of the Civil Rights issue.
I don’t know why some people have no conscience and can kill and rape and steal.
I don’t know why Muslims believe the way they do.
I don’t know why people who call themselves Christians can be on opposites sides of the abortion issue.
I can’t understand why race is such a socially divisive issue.
I don’t understand why some “religions” think they’re the only ones going to heaven.
I don’t know why people who call themselves Christians have to belong to a bunch of different denominations.
I don’t know why I can’t understand how life works.
But God does.

We’re not supposed to know how life works. That’s God’s job. I waste a lot of time, sleep and energy trying to figure out why things are the way they are. I really don’t need to know. God knows everything. He understands everything.

In Isaiah 55 God tells us,

” ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ ” declares the Lord.”

Psalm 145:7 tells us,

Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

And Hebrews 4:13 proclaims,

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Life would be so much better for me if I’d just stop trying to understand everything. I don’t need to know how the universe works. God does. After all, He created it. He created everything. He knows everything about everything and everyone. The entire universe is in His hands, under His control. He’s working out His purpose for each of us. Day by day, moment by moment. Whether we believe in Him or not. Whether we trust Him or not.

If we believe He is in control and sees all and knows all, if we believe our lives are in His hands, we will be blessed.Iff we know Him and love Him and serve Him as the Sovereign ruler of the Universe and our loving heavenly Father, He will give us all the understanding we need.

If you don’t believe all this, that’s okay.  God understands.

Brother Steven, I know that I have commented on this post over at your own blog. I will just say here that I truly appreciated your concluding this post with the words: That’s okay; God understands.”

As a child, I used to ask my mother many questions. One day she told me a secret found in Deuteronomy 29:29 Some things are hidden. They belong to the LORD our God. But the things that have been revealed in these teachings belong to us and to our children forever. We must obey every word of these teachings.

We have trouble doing what is revealed. We shall never understand what is not revealed so He keeps it to Himself.

A song “Known only to Him” was a favorite when I knew it was time to shut up and believe Him.

Great Post. Thank you so much.<

  5. I think of the hymn by William Young Fullerton (sung to the tune of Danny Boy). Each verse starts with “I cannot tell why” or “I cannot tell how” and the latter half of each verse starts “But THIS I know…”

Maybe it is a sign of old age, but I ask “Why?” much less than I did.

After 53 years of knowing, loving and serving my heavenly Father through the Lord Jesus, and experiencing the REALITY of His never-ending care of me, I KNOW that no matter what happens, HE is in control and He only wants the very best for me. I might still ask the question sometimes. I might still not understand, but I know I can trust the One who is totally trustworthy.

    We serve an amazing God!
