Avengers or Overcomers

The Avengers may have the box office secured, but they don’t have dibs on being the mightiest team out there. What about Captain America’s shield, you ask? This team’s one-ups his easily! Maybe you argue another can’t possibly match the Hulk’s strength, Hawkeye’s quiver, and Thor’s hammer? Oh yeah? Well the team I speak of doesn’t just come on par with them… this team leaves them looking like the ninety-eight pound weakling found on the advertisement page of the comic books (okay, okay… for those of you too young, the bully embarrasses him by kicking sand on him in front of his girlfriend).

What team am I speaking of? The Bible uses many names and metaphors for them, but one of my personal favorites is the Overcomers! You’ve never heard of them? Here, listen as one of the team members describes them.

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4,5

Another team member once described them this way.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37

What things do they overcome and conquer, you ask? Well, the list definitely includes trials and tribulations. They also overcome the heresies of false teachers. But hey, these cats even overcome sin and death and… hell! How come no one’s making comic books and movies about these guys and gals?

What kind of weaponry does the team carry into battle? They’re fully equipped with shields and helmets that Iron Man would covet. Their swords are double edged and cut to the marrow of the bone (Ephesians 6:10-20)! I’m telling you friends, this is the team to be on. Did you catch that? I implied that you can be on this team… you can be one of the Overcomers! How do I know? Because I’m one, and if I can be one, then anyone can.

Here’s the good news! You don’t have to be bitten by a spider, or cloaked in gamma rays, or anything else commonly associated with super heroes. Did you grasp what John, one of the team said? He said everyone who is born of God automatically qualifies to be one of the Overcomers! But did you notice that he said it didn’t come by our own efforts? He said it is by our faith! He said by believing in Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God who paid the penalty for all of our sins, we become empowered to be Overcomers. We are Overcomers and conquerors only because Jesus overcame and conquered on our behalf!

So move over Avengers! The Overcomers have a mission, a Great Commission that is! Overcomers Assemble!

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Revelation 12:11

  1. From one Overcomer to another.
YES! We ARE overcomers, because God says we are. Now, we have to accept the fact and go forth into the world and BE overcomers. We are to let Christ work in us and through us, shining out to draw others to Himself.

    What an amazing God!
