Showing honor to someone may not require submission to that person’s actions or beliefs. Honor means honesty, fairness, and integrity. But integrity to what? Over the years society has distorted the true meaning of honor.
Submission to God and His Word sum up all aspects of what honor truly is. But God’s word is being rewritten or ignored when society or other religions refuse to esteem God or His Word. In some cases, they blatantly twist the Word of God.
If our family or friends require us to go outside of the will of God in order to honor them, then honor is non-existent. In trying to honor what is evil or wrong in God’s sight we neglect the prime objective and original meaning of honor. If we do not honor the Supreme Authority above all, we show no honor at all.
As we move forward in our walk with God and in understanding strongholds that can prevent us from receiving blessings from God, we need to receive and acknowledge the Word of God as truth.
The results of honoring God and putting His Word first may not be evident immediately. But the Word does carry a promise of newness and change that will build, heal, bless, and bring spiritual gifts into our lives and will eventually reflect true honor back to us.
Proverbs 22:4 The reward of humility and the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
1. Honor your mother and father. This is the first commandment with a promise. Long life will be given to those who honor mother and father.
Deuteronomy 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
2. Obey your parents in the Lord. Honor and obeying are not equal. Parents who are going against the word of God should be honored, but not necessarily obeyed if they are asking you to do something against the word.
Ephesians 6:1 CHILDREN, OBEY your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right.
3. Honor God. Become familiar with, and accept the Word, as truth and the ten commandments as coming from God.
Luke 18:43 And instantly he received his sight and began to follow Jesus, recognizing, praising, and honoring God; and all the people, when they saw it, praised God.
Romans 14:11 For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God [acknowledge Him to His honor and to His praise].
4. Show honor to and support those who are speaking, teaching, and preaching the truth.
1 Timothy 5:17-18 Let the elders who perform the duties of their office well be considered doubly worthy of honor [and of adequate financial support], especially those who labor faithfully in preaching and teaching. 18For the Scripture says, You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain, and again, The laborer is worthy of his hire.
5. Respect and honor God in truth. Not just in word but in deed. His word takes priority over any tradition or law that does not follow the Word.
Mark 7:7-9 In vain (fruitlessly and without profit) do they worship Me, ordering and teaching [to be obeyed] as doctrines the commandments and precepts of men. 8You disregard and give up and ask to depart from you the commandment of God and cling to the tradition of men [keeping it carefully and faithfully]. 9And He said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting [thus thwarting and nullifying and doing away with] the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition (your own human regulations)!
