Free to be Humble

Free to be Humble

Written by Pola Muzyka

Humanity continually tries to depict humbleness as weakness. But the Lord assures us that when we are humble we have his grace to back us up.

God chose what the world considers weak to put the strong to shame.  There are so many benefits to being humble before God that it’s totally incomprehensible anyone would want to resist.

The only possible explanation is that we keep our eyes on the world and the world’s way of doing things. When our hope is in the world, we can’t see any further. In this case, a stronghold of arrogance sets in. As a result we don’t think we have a need for God or salvation. Since we believe there is no future, we think that this world is all there is. Naturally, pride would follow. And the world in our brief time slot on earth would revolve around us.

A person who continually hardens his heart against spiritual matters, or who has received false teachings about God or other gods, won’t escape the truth. That’s a promise from God’s word. There is no way for a worldly or deceived person to go beyond the grave without recognizing the awesome omnipotence of God and the sacrifice he gave us when he entered the world in human form.

The difference between being prideful in our own abilities and confident in God is in our oneness with the Almighty. To humble ourselves before God gives us assured strength in his grace and wisdom. For a humble person to overcome a stronghold we need only to resist. God will do the rest.

In the end every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord of all. Even if we don’t see the need to humble ourselves now we will not escape it later.

5 Biblical tips to assist us in being humble:

1. Stay away from future disaster.

Proverbs 16:18-19 Pride precedes a disaster, and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall. 19Better to be humble with lowly people than to share stolen goods with arrogant people.

2. Resist the temptation to think the world is all we have. Resist anything that sets itself up against God and his word.

James 4:5-8 Do you think this passage means nothing? It says, “The Spirit that lives in us wants us to be his own.” 6But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, “God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people.” 7So place yourselves under God’s authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. 8Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters.

3. Wait expectantly for God to deliver you. The delayed gratification of being humble before God last for eternity.

Psalm 25:5 Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You [You only and altogether] do I wait [expectantly] all the day long.

Proverbs 20:22 Do not say, I will repay evil; wait [expectantly] for the Lord, and He will rescue you.

4. Enjoy the strength in godly wisdom, grace, and in knowing that we are not alone in any battle if we humbly put our trust in God.

Proverbs 2:2 Making your ear attentive to skillful and godly Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it];

Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

1 Peter 5:5b-6 Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble. 6Be humbled by God’s power so that when the right time comes he will honor you.

5. Reflect on the awesome omnipotence of God and his creation.

Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Revelation 21:22 I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Omnipotent [Himself] and the Lamb [Himself] are its temple.
