To Whom Will You Surrender?

Luke 4:18-19

“The Lord has put his Spirit in me, because He appointed me to tell the Good News to the poor.  He has sent me to tell the captives they are free and to tell the blind that they can see again.  God sent me to free those who have been treated unfairly and to announce the time when the Lord will show his kindness.”

Luke 10:19

“Listen, I have given you the power to walk on snakes and scorpions, power that is greater than the enemy has.  So nothing will hurt you.”

Is there something in your life, anything, that you just can’t seem to get on top of no matter how hard you try?  You pray against it, you read scripture, you quote scripture, you read books, watch videos, receive prayer in church…you literally do everything…but still, you just can’t win?

You are literally wounded in battle, lying in open view of the enemy, bleeding all over yourself.  Helpless and hopeless, you desperately scour your surroundings for assistance, but your fellow troops have left the scene.  In the distance, you see the enemy stomping toward you with his weapon drawn.  At that very moment, you  know you are beaten…there is no chance for you  now.  Even if you begged and pleaded, you are going to die.

The Bible promises in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

As you lie there ready to give up, you remember your orders; to get up and run, escape the enemy at every cost…crawl on your pinky fingers  if you must…but never give up!  In fact, your orders promise that if you do whatever you can do, your commanding officer, who will take notice of your absence, will come and rescue you!  But where is he?  Where is anyone?  You’re at the enemy’s mercy, and it appears you are finished.

Are you going to go ahead and surrender to the enemy, even though you are strictly instructed to take every necessary measure to avoid this?  Have you even attempted to call out for your commanding officer?  Or are you too afraid, because it just seems easier to give up than to reduce your pride by crying out  like a helpless baby?  Have you done all that you can do?  Have you fought to the point of blood and anguish?  Be honest.

Didn’t your commanding officer just pat you on the back as you headed out to battle, and didn’t he say, “’s going to be rough out there, but don’t worry!  I’ve got your back!  In fact, here, take this and keep it with you!”  You glance back at him as he hands you an emergency flare.  “I will not leave you stranded.  I will come to you, and I will rescue you.  I will give my life for my soldiers if I must–I don’t care!  Now go out there and fight, and fight a good fight!  And whatever you do soldier, do not give up!”

Have you taken hold of the emergency device God gave to you?  In fact, where the soldier has only one emergency device, a flare, you have much more–you  have a living book called the Bible, through which God speaks to you, and you have Him powerfully and victoriously alive inside of you!  You’ve got more than a weapon, and you don’t even have to unfasten a bag or reach in your holster to get it–it is a weapon firmly hidden inside of your heart…the Holy Spirit!  He gave you the power of the Spirit in prayer, and when you cry out for the Lord, and you have hit rock bottom, He will come for you, and He will stand between you and the enemy and fight until the enemy is defeated at last!  He is your commanding officer, and He has given you specific orders that you are required to carry out at any cost!

“But I’ve fought the good fight!  I’ve done all I am supposed to do!  I just can’t win!”  You say.

Are you speaking from a fountain of empty faith?  Are you not speaking defeat upon yourself?  Where is your will?  What is your desire?

So the ultimate question I have here for you; to whom are you surrendering–to the enemy, or to God?

Joseph withstood the test, and he ran from sin!  Genesis 39:1-12 says:

1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

2The Lord was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6So he left in Joseph’s care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

8But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

11One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

Stand up and take hold of the power God has given you!  Quit lying around in defeat, helplessly handing yourself over to the enemy!  Has God not promised over and over throughout His living Word that He would help you?  Surrender yourself to God and let Him perform His work in you!  How?  Give up your own will, lustful desires, and godless activities!  Put to death those things in yourself and let the Holy Spirit rise up like a well of life inside of you!  Death hurts, and war is brutal; be a victorious soldier and never, ever accept defeat!

And one more thing before I finish.  You have a purpose and a high calling…to go out into the world and tell people the Good News of Jesus Christ.  So even if you don’t know  your specific, personal calling, we are all called to the office of evangelism to the lost.  God needs you, those lost souls need you.  You can, do, and will make a difference!  He wants to use you, but you need to complete basic training so that He can.

Are you ready?  Are you willing to stand up for Jesus Christ?  Because He laid down and surrendered everything, including His very life, for you!  Don’t take too long to think about it; there’s someone dying without Jesus Christ right now, and they’re going to spend forever in a lake of fire where they will be eternally separated from God!  And if the opportunity presented itself for you to witness to that person, and you ignored the call, you will answer to God.

1 Timothy 6:11-14  “But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you are also called, and have professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give you charge in the sight of God, who brings all things to life, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; That you keep this commandment without spot, irreproachable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:”

The only surrender that saves us eternally is our surrender to Jesus our Saviour

Surrender to the flesh and the enemy of our souls, the devil leads to hell and destruction.
Don’t. Think and Turn from the wicked ways to Jesus.
