I was flattered as the pay offered was very good for that time. However, from a young child I was taught that I had to consider the will of God for my life and especially in choosing my career, as it was the time when I would gain valuable experience and only the Lord knew what was the best career path for me – should I pursue the path of high pay in banking or to practice the profession I qualified which offered the lowest salary of the three jobs? I took Him at His Word –If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5
It was not a case of wisdom in time of temptation or against sin-action, but wisdom to pursue the right path that will glorify God and give me opportunities to serve and witness for Him and to grow in my career and to meet my financial needs. Based on God’s word I knew I was short-sighted; I had a heart prone to sin; and there were great and important matters pertaining to duty and salvation on which I could not but feel that I needed heavenly guidance. It is one of the privileges of Christians, that we may not only go to God and ask him for that general wisdom which is needful for us in life, but that whenever a particular emergency arises, a case of perplexity and difficulty in regard to duty, we may bring that particular thing before his throne, with the assurance that he will guide us. An unbeliever who does not ask will not have God’s guidance. When we ask we can expect God to answer us generously and there is nothing that is stinted and close; there is no partiality; there is no withholding of His favor because we are poor, and unlettered, and unknown.
He does not reproach or chide us for our past conduct; for our foolishness; for our importunity in asking. He permits us to come in the most free manner, and meets us with a Spirit of entire kindness; when we ask a favor of God, that we shall never be reproached in an unfeeling manner, or meet with a harsh response. This promise in regard to the wisdom that may be necessary for us, it is absolute; and we are sure that if it be asked in a proper manner it will be granted us. There can be no doubt that it is one of the things which God is able to impart; which will be for our own good; and which, therefore, He is ever ready to bestow unlike others, which He may withhold for our good.
How does He show us the way?
(1) Through His Word – by enabling us to see clearly the meaning of the direction from the Bible and to understand the directions which he has there given to guide us;
(2) By the secret influences of His Spirit.
(a) Suggesting to us the way in which we should go, and,
(b) Inclining us to do that which is prudent and wise; and,
(3) By the events of His Providence making plain to us the path of duty, and removing the obstructions which may be in our path. It is easy for God to guide His people; and they who “watch daily at the gates, and wait at the posts of the doors” of wisdom Proverbs 8:34, will not be in danger of going astray. Psalm 25:9.
My testimony is that when He led me to accept the lowest paid of the three employment offers, I could not see the exciting career path He had for me which gave me exposure to mergers and acquisitions on the international and local levels, being involved in counselling and helping those in the most miserable of circumstances, affected by changes in life conditions, in the love of the Lord, praying for those who were sick , ministering and sharing the gospel to many across boundaries who lived in third world and communist countries, as well as helping to rescue two bosses from the fields of sin back to His fold. I was His privileged tent-maker given access to all levels of society – from the highest CEO to the lowest production line worker and sweeper. He gave me plenty of experience which money could not buy, to cross national, cultural and denominational lines, to unite as well as to collaborate in His harvest field .
Praise the Lord for wisdom to make that first right choice in my career. Best of all, through it all, and there have been the valleys and the mountain tops – He has been with me and continually gave me wisdom each time I asked. Who can do better than my Lord? He prepared me for the ministry of ChristianBlessings with others long before I knew it, and to be a blessing for Him to whoever He has allowed to cross my path, for the rest of my life, ever since I started on my first rung of my career ladder. It is so obvious now, praise the Lord, as I look in retospect now in my retirement.
I knew when I committed my way to the Lord I could be confident as He is the Source of wisdom
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Psalm 16:3
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; Proverbs 3:5
I thank God I could roll the whole burden of life upon the Lord. Leave with Jehovah not only my fretfulness , but all my cares; in fact, submit the whole tenor of my way to Him. Cast away anxiety, resign my will, submit my judgment, leave all with the God of all. What a medicine this is for expelling envy! How blessed I am living every day in obedience to it! “Trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.”
My destiny shall be joyfully accomplished if I confidently entrust all to my Lord. I can serenely sing –
“Thy way, not mine, O Lord, However dark it be;
O lead me by thine own right hand,Choose out the path for me.
Smooth let it be or rough, It will be still the best
Winding or straight, it matters not, It leads me to thy rest.”
I thank God “ the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”” James 3:17
There is nothing better than to be in the centre of God’s will – and this can be accomplished only by submitting ourselves to Him. Great are His ways and His works.
There is a difference I know in the manner when others without His wisdom and in their own wisdom face strife, competition, pain and sickness.
In the words of the song sung famously by George Beverly Shea,
I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Than to be the king of a vast domain
And be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame;
I’d rather be true to His holy name
He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs;
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead
If you have never asked God for wisdom to know Him and be surrendered to His will, you really do not know what you are missing. O taste and see that the Lord is good – even in the worst hours of your life. Amen. God is good.
