Not all Christians are double-minded. The Bible speaks of and also illustrates those who are single-minded.
A double-minded man is unstable. A single-minded man is steadfast in Christ. A double-minded man gives in to the flesh. A single-minded man walks in the Spirit.
Double-mindedness will yield to sin and find comfort in messages and preachers that “condone” the double-minded life. Single mindedness will trust only the “holiness of the Spirit of God” to overcome temptations, the Devil, the world, the flesh, etc. The Bible fortifies the single-minded man’s stance in a present evil world. Reason? Christ centered not…self centered.
A double-minded man is not a Christ-centered man. The self life still tries to rule the double-minded and succeeds often. Self hinders the double-minded man in decisions, choices, character, victory, certainty, etc. The single-minded man has allowed the Spirit of holiness to “crucify the flesh” and its affections and lusts thereof. It is essential for self to be crucified (not forgiven) in order to be single-minded and Christ centered in this life. A double-minded man lacks in these areas.
Nothing “defeats” the single-minded Christian. There is no yielding to temptation as the double-minded will do. The Spirit of God has dominion and rules the mind, will, and intellect of the single-minded child of God. Totally possessed by Christ. Without struggle like double-minded men contend with. The single-minded Christian will not allow the opinions of unlearned men to deceive, mislead, or wrench the Bible out of context. I’ve made note that many preachers and those from behind pulpits around the globe leave single-mindedness out of their ministry and preaching. They teach more about doublemindedness than they do single-mindedness. Where is the victory here?
Being of one mind with one accord is the only life of victory in Jesus. Being of two minds going different directions show that men are unsure and uncertain about their faith in Christ. Double-mindedness is a place where the Devil finds easy prey. Single-minded, Christ centered Christians (with full armor) are not easy prey for the wiles of the Devil. Even temptations do not affect the single-minded like they do the double-minded man. Single-mindedness allows the child of God to say, “No” to temptations. “I am God’s property and I must glorify God in my body and Spirit, which are His”.
Single-mindedness is like the “little rudder” on the back of the huge ship. This tiny little rudder steers and takes this huge vessel in the right direction. Single-mindedness is likewise like the “bridle” that steers and tames the unbroken horse. All pointing to the work and power of the Holy Spirit that can take “full possession” of the human soul…in faithfulness, obedience, and victory in Jesus.
Single-minded and Christ centered faith allows victory over self. It allows the Spirit of Holiness to “take control over” the old you. Greater is He that is in you. Greater is God. Greater is the divine nature even over the carnal. Greater! Greater! Greater! Greater is He than the old man and the carnal mind which is an enmity against God. God can rid man of self just like He rids man of sin. God can remove inherited sin from the life of a believer and make men single-minded. God can make men steady and certain with His blessed assurance. He can take away the heart of stone…and put a new heart within. He can rid man of double-mindedness and aid men in becoming single-minded.
The mind, the will, the actions, the character, the decisions, and the choices of a single-minded man are controlled by the Spirit of God. Like the little rudder on the huge ship, or the bridle in the horse’s mouth. These faculties are controlled by the Spirit of God! Controlled by the Spirit! Totally possessed by the Spirit! Steered by the Spirit of holiness. Governed by the Spirit of Holiness. Single-minded men are owned, ruled, and controlled by the Spirit of Holiness. Double-minded men “are not” controlled by the Spirit of Holiness… nor are they Christ centered. Self centered is a better term for double-mindedness.
If you’re a child of God you can be in either state mentioned above. Double-minded or Single-minded. I prefer the single-minded state giving all thanks to Christ the purifier and sanctifier. You do not have to be swayed with man’s opinion or messages that tickle the ears. God’s Word is clear enough and not controversial there are two types of believers. The single-minded or the double-minded. James said,”Purify your hearts you double-minded”. Paul spoke of those with singleness of heart. God doesn’t want His children to be bound with self-centeredness. You can lay the old man to rest. You can bury the old life. He will give you enough Grace to keep from showing the old life anymore.
You can be “crucified with Christ”. Crucified from double-mindedness. The heart can be purged from self in the crucifixion. You can die to the Old Adam. You can be dead to the Old life. You can be resurrected to a single-minded and Christ centered life. No more self. No more letting the “old you” get the best of you. Single-minded and Christ-centered. Glory for the evidence! Christ not only forgives sin but delivers from self that causes double-mindedness.
To be single-minded is the best way for the life of victory in Jesus. No defeat! No war within! No Struggle! The “whole” man…singleminded, owned, ruled, and controlled by Christ. It’s a Christ centered life!
The Bible says, “you can cast down every wicked imagination and bring every thought into captivity in obedience to Christ”…all pointing to the Single-minded. A double-minded man would not always experience the blessing of “constant obedience” and “constant victory” in Jesus. Even thoughts come under control when your owned, ruled, and controlled by Christ in single-mindedness.
