underwater 1.pngThe diving bell spider [Argyroneta aquatic] is the only spider known to spend its whole life underwater.  Females build an underwater ‘diving bell’ web which is filled with air.  These are used to digest prey and to mate and raise their young.  They live almost entirely within the bell, just darting out to catch prey that touch the bell or the silky webs that anchor it.  Males build smaller bells.

Just like land spiders, they need oxygen to breathe, so they occasionally surface to renew their air supply.  They bring back a bubble of air that sticks to the hairy abdomen, and then deposit the bubble into a little silk air tank spun for the purpose.

South America hosts a curious little underwater spider that carries a bubble of air on its back.  It remains underwater for hours, but breathes air from above, contained in the bubble. When it returns to the surface, it is perfectly dry, unaffected by the water in which it lives. Not a drop of water will have penetrated its capsule.

These spiders live
but they live
maintained by a supply of life from

Isn’t this a picture of the Christian life?
WE are living IN THE WORLD
but when we take our ‘air bubble’ of the LIFE FROM ABOVE
we are totally SEPARATED FROM and unaffected by
the world in which we live.

Paul warns that believers and non-believers have no agreement and he likens it to the fact that darkness and light cannot exist together.

2 Corinthians 6:14-15,17 (Amplified Bible)
What partnership have right living and right standing with God
with iniquity and lawlessness?
Or how can light fellowship with darkness?
What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil?
Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
So come out from among them and SEPARATE YOURSELVES from them,
says the Lord, and touch not any unclean thing.

James makes it unmistakably clear:
James 4:4 (Amplified Bible)
Do you not know
that being the WORLD’S FRIEND is being GOD’S ENEMY?

So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world
takes his stand as an enemy of God.

1 John 2:15 (Amplified Bible)
Do not love the world or the things that are in the world.
If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.

Ephesians 5:11   (Amplified Bible)
Take no part in and have no fellowship with
the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness,
but instead let your lives be in contrast,
so as to expose and reprove and convict them.

Of our own selves, in our own strength, we are unable to resist the influence of the world. Everywhere we go we encounter the work of the devil in belittling the truth of the Gospel and undermining the standards of wholesome living. It pervades our homes via the TV set and even the daily news.  BUT PRAISE GOD that in Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we HAVE the means of victory.  God has supplied all we need to live a life of victory over our enemies: the world, the flesh and the devil.

We have been supplied with, and told to put on the whole armour of God

Ephesians 6:11-14   (Amplified Bible)  (portions – read all 6:10-18)
Put on God’s whole armour . . . which God supplies,
so that you are able to successfully stand against
all the strategies and deceits of the devil . . .
that you may be able to resist and stand your ground
and having done all the crisis demands, to stand firm . . .
Stand therefore.

Colossians 3:1-3  (Amplified)
If then you have been raised with Christ to a new life,
thus sharing His resurrection,
aim at and seek the rich, eternal treasures that are above,
where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
And set your minds and keep them set on what is above,
the higher things, not on the things that are on the earth.
For as far as this world is concerned,
you have died and your new, real life is hid with Christ in God.

We live IN the world – we must, for our ministry is there. We are called to show Jesus Christ to the world, and when He is on the throne, dictating our thoughts, motives, desires and actions, we will not be contaminated by the world around us.
We need to take our “air bubble” of air from above with us – the enabling and empowering of Holy Spirit – and allow HIM to work in us and through us.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20   (Amplified Bible)
You are not your own. You were bought for a price –
purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own.
So then, honour God and bring glory to Him in your body.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

What a blessing a small spider can be for all of us who are saved. May we all keep looking to the Lord for our divine supplies and empowerment as we live in the midst of a sin darkened world. Thanks for the posting and the reminder to always be reliant upon the Lord!

    • As you know, spiders caused me nightmares for many years, but I am thankful that they give me no horrors now, and I praise God for the lessons He shows from these creatures. When we depend on Him, He gives the victory.

  2. ptl2010 says:

It is not easy to live above the world in our own strength, but praise The Lord, we have His Holy Spirit to empower us so that we may live in the World, and need not be of the world. The diving spell spider is a very good analogy. Cloudwatcher. thank you for another lesson from nature. Indeed we must breathe in the air of heaven, the Holy Spirit and no other spirit.

    • Just as the diving bell spider takes its atmosphere with it, so must we take our atmosphere – the atmosphere of our heavenly home where we are citizens – into the sin-affected, darkened world in which we temporarily live. If we do not use and depend on the God-given resources to enable us to live victoriously in this world, we will fail. If we feed on the Word and abide in Him, in constant fellowship with Him, HE will make us more than conquerors.

      What an incredibly amazing God!

  3. Pure Glory says:

The diving bell spider is amazing. What a wonderful picture you have painted. I learned something from your post.

    • God’s creation is indeed amazing. How anyone can try to say these just ‘happened’ or evolved is beyonf belief. Every part of creation demands belief in a Creator.
I am thankful our Creator God also allows us to learn from His creation and apply His truths to our lives.
