Renewal of the Covenant

29 [a]These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.

Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them:

Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders. But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.”

When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Both former mercies, and fresh mercies, should be thought on by us as motives to obedience. The hearing ear, and seeing eye, and the understanding heart, are the gift of God. All that have them, have them from him. God gives not only food and raiment, but wealth and large possessions, to many to whom he does not give grace. Many enjoy the gifts, who have not hearts to perceive the Giver, nor the true design and use of the gifts. We are bound, in gratitude and interest, as well as in duty and faithfulness, to keep the words of the covenant.

Response

O Lord our God, for many of us who have enjoyed Your blessings of salvation, deliverance and mercy  in our lives, please help us to remember and appreciate Your provisions. Help us remember always Your faithfulness in providing for our every spiritual, physical and emotional need so that in return we may follow You and offer ourselves to  Your glory.

Lord , for the many who have yet to experience Your wondrous deliverance  show forth Your power in revealing Yourself to them. May they see You glorified on the throne, Your Son crucified and risen and  seated on the right hand of the Father interceding for them, and the Holy Spirit  knocking on their hearts’ doors to enter. As they accept Your grace and mercy , pour forth Your blessings upon them – salvation from the penalty of sin, deliverance from the grip of sin, freedom to live for You in the power of the conquering Saviour and Lord. May they touched by Your love, love and live for You forevermore.

Amen.

  1. One of the many characteristics of God which I greatly appreciate is His faithfulness. It is simply because HE IS FAITHFUL that I can rest in Him, knowing that whatever happens, He will undertake for me. He always has, and He always will. Praise God!
