Dim Sum – He’s gone too

128224082832f5N4April 25, 2013 his wife left him.  Since then, in sorrow my neighbour continued to exist without his “eyes” for she was his eyes, which only saw shadows.

Two days ago, he asked “over the fence” if I could help read his mail for him (which was piling up he said) and help him respond as necessary. Yes, I said, I will help on Thursday, that is today.

At 6am today he awoke,  and then returned to sleep, never to awake again.

14Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. 15For that you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. … James 4:14-15

In three days, he will be cremated “Psalm 102:3 For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers.”
How apt worldly and contriving men are to leave God out of their plans! How vain it is to look for any thing good without God’s blessing and guidance! The frailty, shortness, and uncertainty of life, ought to check the vanity and presumptuous confidence of all projects for futurity. We can fix the hour and minute of the sun’s rising and setting to-morrow, but we cannot fix the certain time of a vapour being scattered. So short, unreal, and fading is human life, and all the prosperity or enjoyment that attends it; though bliss or woe for ever must be according to our conduct during this fleeting moment. We are always to depend on the will of God. Our times are not in our own hands, but at the disposal of God. Our heads may be filled with cares and contrivances for ourselves, or our families, or our friends; but Providence often throws our plans into confusion. All we design, and all we do, should be with submissive dependence on God. It is foolish, and it is hurtful, to boast of worldly things and aspiring projects; it will bring great disappointment, and will prove destruction in the end. Omissions are sins which will be brought into judgment, as well as commissions. He that does not the good he knows should be done, as well as he who does the evil he knows should not be done, will be condemned. Oh that we were as careful not to omit prayer, and not to neglect to meditate and examine our consciences, as we are not to commit gross outward vices against light!

Response:

Time is free, but it’s priceless. I can’t own it, but I can use it. I can’t keep it, but I can spend it. Once I’ve lost it I can never get it back. My times are in Your hand.

Psalm 31
14 But I trust in you, Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hands;
deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
from those who pursue me.
16 Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your unfailing love.
17 Let me not be put to shame, Lord,
for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
and be silent in the realm of the dead.
18 Let their lying lips be silenced,
for with pride and contempt
they speak arrogantly against the righteous.
19 How abundant are the good things
that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,
on those who take refuge in you.
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from all human intrigues;
you keep them safe in your dwelling
from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the Lord,     for he showed me the wonders of his love     when I was in a city under siege.

22 In my alarm I said,     “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy     when I called to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people!     The Lord preserves those who are true to him,     but the proud he pays back in full.

24 Be strong and take heart,     all you who hope in the Lord.

  1. Wasting time is a kind of unarmed robbery ~ anon.

    I’ve just a little minute –
    Only sixty seconds in it –
    Forced upon me – can’t refuse it –
    Didn’t seek it – didn’t choose it –
    But it’s up to me to USE it!

    I must suffer if I lose it –
    Give account if I abuse it –
    Just a tiny little minute –
    But ETERNITY is IN IT!

    Yes, many.couples do not realize that the description “till death do us part” does not end for the remaining living one at the death of the other half. Memories and habits are ingrained and die hard, and as sadness and sorrow take over the deep pain of separation could cause death of a broken heart.

  3. This man’s story is also a testimony and a warning. A broken heart can kill.
