It is not only our financial lives that are subjected to the concept of risk and reward. It is every facet of our lives. More especially it is our level of risk in the pursuit of the eternal. It is not only those of us who are older who should anticipate the life beyond , but every living being must first weigh the consequences of our decisions. It is truly later than we may think.
Every time I read a revered quote by one of the notables in literature, I say to myself; “I wish that I had said that.” In the end we all can put away the feeling that those special words convey. It is enough that we search for those expressions and we take aboard the messages they carry. Such is a favored one of mine by William Cullen Bryant;
So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent hills of death,
Thou go not, like a quarry slave at night.
Scourged to his dungeon. but, sustained and soothed
By unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
While that may not be everyone’s vision of the hereafter; “To lie down to pleasant dreams” it stands firm that trust is the ingredient required to fulfill the dream that we do have.
Two things that I have in mind would be my personal addendum; First, we must have a history of communication with all things that are “of” our Creator. Second; Heaven is indescribable in our own language, we must use His. It is displayed in all things “right and good” that surround us in this life. If we like what things we see here, we will love things there.
The confidence inspired by Bryant’s words “Go sustained and soothed”, is that bearing of confidence required when we face risk and reward held in our freedom of choices.
The only risk is found in not hearing, daily, His mentoring voice as He proclaims His ultimate rewards to those who are His good, faithful, and listening, servants in this life.
