The Edwin Hawkins singers became famous in 1968 singing a song I love to this day, O Happy Day. There was another song on that album that often floats through my consciousness – Jesus Lover of My Soul.
I have not been able to find that exact name for the Lord in the scripture – the Lover of my Soul, but it speaks to me in any case.
The name I do find, though it is only here in the Song of Songs, is “Him whom my soul loves!” The phrase comes up 5 times in the song, and four of them are right here in four consecutive verses 3:1, 2, 3 and 4.
This goes to how completely in love our maiden is with the Lord.
What does this love sickness do for our maiden?
On my bed night after night I sought him
Whom my soul loves; ~ 3:1
She lies awake thinking of Him.
I must seek him whom my soul loves. ~ 3:2
Her love for Him gets her up and moving.
And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’ ~ 3:3
It is how she speaks of Him to everyone she meets. There is no shame in her search for her lover.
When I found him whom my soul loves;
I held on to him and would not let him go ~ 3:4
It gave her the will to seek Him until she found Him.
Though she could not feel His presence, she did not accuse Him, or turn her back on her relationship with Him. She rose up, stirred up her courage, went out and sought Him.
She did not worry about what others in Church would think if they found out she was in a dry spot. She did not wallow, or question His love for her.
She got up and went after the One her soul loved.
O Church – pursue Him today – like hid treasure. Go after the Lover of your soul. Abandon your heart to Him today. Go after the One your soul loves. And when you find Him, never let Him go.
Do you feel as though you have been searching for ages, and cannot find Him?
In Jeremiah’s day, when Israel still faced decades of exile, the Lord promised:
Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the LORD, ~ Jeremiah 29:12-13
Seek Him today.
See you again soon
