Dim Sum – When someone talks behind your back

Forgive

Have you suffered the wounds from being back-stabbed? Especially when it came from a trusted friend?  How did you handle it?

We can expect people to back-stab us
1 Corinthians 4:13-15 (Worldwide English)
13 They talk behind our backs, but we still try to win them. People treat us as a dirt pile, the rubbish of the world. And they still do these things. 14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed. But you are my dear children and I want to teach you.15 Even if you have ten thousand people to take care of you as Christians, yet you do not have many fathers. I am your Christian father because I brought you the good news.

Psalm 71:10 MSG
My enemies are talking behind my back, watching for their chance to knife me.

Let none expect ease or comfort from the world. Those who love the Lord, often are hated and persecuted; men wondered at for their principles and conduct; but the Lord has been their strong refuge. The faithful servants of God may be assured that he will not cast them off in old age, nor forsake them when their strength fails. The craft and malicious taunts of his enemies now led him to call for aid.
Psalm 3:2  Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.”
Psalm 7:2 or they will tear me apart like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to
rescue me.
How shall we respond?
If we live as men-pleasers we would really mind it if people talk behind our backs. However, God’s word tells us to still try to win them for Christ who is their only hope.  He gives hope to better living which includes good rather than bad about people. We need to remember that the Lord teaches us to return good for evil and when we suffer unjustly, He will make it right in the end. We need to love one another, forgive one another and not allow bitterness to enter our lives.
If others talk behind our back, it is their problem not ours. We are to live our lives above reproach following on our dear Lord’s example. Then all the talking behind our back will be lies and soon will be revealed  for the truth must set us free.
The bully may thrive on this for he builds on lies which someone had referred to behind the victim’s back. He ridicules and perhaps even aggrandises himself by highlighting his victim’s inability to stand up for himself but the Lord is the avenger of those who live righteous lives and in fear of Him.
Do not stand in the way of  sinners – let us not remain where people talk  behind your or other’s backs. Let us move away and not participate in gossip.
Let us not be carriers of gossip which kills rather than builds. Let us instead build with acknowledgement of the good characteristics of people. We do not have to look down on people who may seem week or poor and who cannot defend themselves.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Will we react to what people say behind us with stress? Stress is the mental, emotional or physical strain caused by things such as anxiety or relentless dealing with a taxing situation. Stress causes elevated blood pressure, depression, “lashing out” and a whole host of other unpleasant things. In many respects, stress is the single biggest enemy that breaks our bodies down, wears us down mentally and causes cracks in our emotional and spiritual armor.

Will we let the Lord repay rather than take things into our own hands?  Have you heard it said  “Vengeance is mine, I will repay”.

The Lord says forgive for as you forgive so you are forgiven. Let us lay everything that has been said at the foot of the cross and leave it there. We do not have to carry the burden of what people say of us behind our backs. Let us hear the Word of the Lord loud and clear – Forgiveness is the mental, emotional and/or spiritual process of ceasing to feel resentment, indignation or anger against another person for a perceived offense, difference or mistake, or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution.

Have you back-stabbed instead of being back-stabbed?

Then ask the Lord to forgive for the wrong we do

and let the Lord keep the watch against all that others might say behind our backs.
