A friend recently shared that her son is having some self-esteem issues. It is a result of a myriad of things – actually a perfect storm in the life of a high school upperclassman – when the pressure is on to keep up grades, apply for colleges, meet coaches’ expectations, manage a job and volunteer work all whilst dealing with teacher, parent and peer pressures.
Ah yes, the life of an “adulteen.” This is the time when these young people aren’t kids anymore and are not quite adults.
I don’t know, sometimes I think that young ladies at this age seem to be better at dealing with this – not to be sexist here, but females are naturally strong multi-taskers and are socialized to “let the pressure” all out. Teenage boys? Not so much.
For my friend, her son was dealing with all this, as well as managing some snarky and difficult behaviours in people he needed to interact with. What did he do? He sucked it up and sucked it into his psyche – and it began to fester and wound him.
As a parent and mentor, I am frequently concerned about the tools these young people have to really overcome these kinds of mini-life crisis’s.
Though we cannot rush in and “fix it,” we must guide them to remember that they are more than the sum of their academic or sports accomplishments, people’s opinions, or what college they are accepted into.
It is difficult, especially for young people who are not grounded in the truth, grace and love of God’s word. They WILL listen to the lies that society tells them and they will judge their worth by the same measure.
So as a reminder for my friend’s son and for all of the son’s and daughters I am writing this poem for you…
You are the child the Lord has made – He rejoices and He is glad
God chose your face, your eyes, your heart, He wants to be your Dad
When you were born, the angels danced and truly made a scene
As God’s idea He fashioned you to be such a special being
He could have chosen a different child to be created at this time
But God did not – He chose just you, with special plans for you in mind
You are made to reflect His image, a Master’s work so fine
It matters not what others think, He says that “You are Mine”
He has special plans for your life, so serve Him and others too
And if you will just believe in Him, He will teach you to walk it through
You will learn He can be trusted, in His goodness and His mercy
He will always be a source for you and never leave your thirsty
His truths are Living Water, for the heart and for the soul
His love is everlasting, He gathers prayers in golden bowls
He promises to never leaves us, and my friend I know it’s true
For He gave the world His Son, to save both me and you.
So young one, please trust the Maker, to walk with you each day
And He will guide or carry you, but never let you be astray.
So gird yourself with knowledge that only His opinion counts
That God the Father, Son, and Spirit will alleviate your doubts
You are the child the Lord has made – so rejoice and dont be sad
Now look into that mirror son, and see what makes God glad.
