Dim Sum – I want to be a model for Christ

“Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him—for this is his lot. Moreover when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God” (Eccles. 5:18-19).

I want to be a model for Jesus. Models attract attention to the dress or product or way of life  and cause others to desire what is being modeled. I want to attract others to and for Jesus.

My maternal grandfather was a leader in the family. He experienced the gift of God in his 70’s. He was a professional life model,  I emulate.

He  lived  four score plus years when he flew away to meet His Saviour. Psalm 90:10 (KJV) 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

He was disciplined,  worldly wise keeping up to date  on what was going on from the  business news of the BBC radio  world service every working day in the 1960’s. Later after he became a Christian, he became knowledgeable about what God was doing around him and could do through him.

He was a good steward of what he was blessed with.  Family, home, resources.

He was successful,  becoming the first Asian Director of an international trading house with commercial trade internationally and adopted good business ethics with suppliers, creditors, customers and fellow employees.

He travelled widely and he returned home with gifts galore for his growing extended family. There were jewellery of gold and silver, diamonds, pearls, jade etc . He  later learnt these gifts were temporary and  he could not establish his eternal destiny on these but only on faith in Jesus Christ.

He was a serious old- timer, autocratic father and grandfather, but kind, gentle and best of all he was fair and played no favorites.

He exemplified the epitome of business success for me. His professional expertise became his tool to trade with.  He was an accountant and more. I wanted to be like him.

“This is what the LORD says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight” (Jer. 9:23-24).

As my grandfather was my model in the natural, I  aspire to be a spiritual model  for God’s glory to those who come after me. I would like to show forth  God’s wondrous  gifts and blessings with exercise of  good stewardship , God-given leadership and wisdom, discipline, knowing what is happening around me and seizing opportunities for Him,   earning respect as  a woman worthy of God’s calling and a professional.  I want to be  unashamedly a godly influence, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, that those who come after may yearn to have and live unto Christ.

My spiritual example and mentor through the years  by regular correspondence (first with my mother than with me since 1984  after my mother went to glory)  for mutual prayer , counsel and support,   and  by her various visits to our home each time she visited Singapore (till she was 96 years old) , was Dr Lula M Baird, an American  AOG church pioneer missionary who preached in Cantonese, a Chinese dialect spoken in Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and worldwide .(http://ag.org/wim/resources/books/book_reviews/br_0708_Lula_Baird.cfm ) .

I was introduced to her  at age 6 when she was my pastor and had  fasted and prayed for three days and nights,  for my recovery from a fall which rendereded me unconscious at home,  for that period in the  early 1950’s. It was she who patiently  spent countless hours discussing and debating with my grandfather on the Christian faith and influenced his faith when he finally accepted the Lord in his late 70’s.   I was privileged to attend her  100th birthday celebration in December 2008 in California. It was an honor when she took the trouble to travel to San Francisco to spend her last Sunday morning worship and lunch  time with our two families from Singapore.

We learn from

A mature Christian is someone who is a model, a pacesetter; someone who influences others in positive ways according to biblical standards! Modeling Christian virtues, virtues of true spirituality, is crucial to effective ministry in the world. Without biblical and godly models we are cast into a restless sea that can only toss up refuse and mud (Isa. 57:20). William J. Bennett once  said, “We—all of us, but especially the young—need around us individuals who possess a certain nobility, a largeness of soul, and qualities of human experience worth imitating and striving for.”

People can never be biblical leaders and truly mature until they come to realize that God has called them to be examples to others. As the Lord Jesus pointed out, “A disciple is not greater than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). In this context, the Lord was showing that one’s true spirituality, or godliness (or lack thereof) is revealed in our actions and that such actions will of :necessity influence others either for good or for evil. Students, sons, daughters, and the flock, tend to emulate their leaders, parents, guardians, teachers, or heroes. The tendency is for us to shy away from this responsibility and reality, but in order to be truly mature and a leader, one must accept this as a reality of leadership.

Yes we must be godly influences who will leave behind precious influential memories for the young who come after us. I invite every Contributor of ChristianBlessings to join me in this quest on this fourth anniversary of  ChristianBlessings,  not for personal fortune or fame but for the extension and promulgation of His gospel and influence, with due  respect and acceptance by people of all races and status in community.  We must decrease as He increases is what we must remember and remind each one who joins us in our endeavor.

May all glory redound to Him who made ChristianBlessings and all who are here come together to fulfill His purpose for such a time as this. So help us God to be  good role models here and everywhere He sends us.

We have only one life each . Let us live our lives  honorably for the Lord. Let us not be cowed by the enemy who raises his leaders in positions of authority. We are called to be people of authority under Him,  in the Name of Jesus and for His glory. Amen.

The world have their Goliaths, our God must have His Davids.
