Teens Blog – SF 2 – Life Cut Short – Are You Prepared?

LifeCutShortGary Slok was only fifteen on the doomed Malaysian Airlines flight. Eleven-year-old Miguel had been worried prior to going aboard by asking his mother Samira questions about death, his soul, and about God. They were among the 80 children who perished on that fateful day. Other than Miguel who had a sense that something was wrong, I’m sure the others saw it as any other day. They really didn’t know that something this tragic could happen to them. Daily, many of you live your life of going to school or summer vacation, hanging out with friends or working at a job. Would you ever consider the thought that your life could be over in a flash? Spiritually, would you be prepared if death was imminent? Let’s take a look at their lives of these three Christian teens. Billy truly loves God and wants to serve Him in every way possible; doing his best to honor and be obedient to what God is calling him. Yes, he still makes mistakes, sins and struggles a lot. He is not perfect but willing to serve and seek after God. He reminds himself every day when he wakes up, to love the Lord with all his heart, all his mind and all his soul. Then we meet Sharon. She was brought up in a Christian home and knows and loves God. But she also has an attitude that she has a lot of living to do. In fact, she wants to party a lot and even be risky to do some things she knows she ought not to do. But she figures she will say sorry later and everything will be alright. So, she walks with one step in the world and the other with God. Lastly, we meet Jeff. He knew about God and heard all the stories from the Bible. He knew all the right things to say and do. He thinks that since he said the sinner’s prayer when he was 5 years old that this is good enough to get into eternity. Long gone are his thoughts about God except on special occasions. He is now enjoying his “do what you feel like” life and not worried about his future. Do you know where you stand with Christ? In 2 Corinthians 13:5 it says, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?” Do you have that much confidence that you will go to heaven? You can do all the right things and say the right things like the Pharisees in the book of Matthew. But even Jesus said in Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.” You can show up to church and sing the songs, pray the prayers and listen to a good sermon. But God isn’t interested in those things as nice as they are. He is interested in the attitude of your heart. Do you love Him enough to sacrifice your own desires and wants to follow him, even to death? Jesus sacrificed everything for you. No one asked Him to die for you. And yet He saw you so worthy to die for. As I mentioned last week, being a Christian teen is hard. However, with God’s guidance and help, He can strengthen, encourage and lead you in your walk of faith with Him. He said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Furthermore, He gave you His Word as your foundation to build upon and grow in. All the tools and answers to get you through each day are in His Word. All He asks of you is, “Are you willing to lay down your desires to follow me?” You are living in a crucial time in history where the world is changing dramatically. Just like Gary, he never thought he was going to die young. None of you do either. But it goes to show you how unprepared you really are. If your life was to be taken tomorrow, do you have that assurance that you will spend eternity with Jesus? If not, say this prayer and act upon it, because your life depends on it. Dear Heavenly Father, I have sinned. I have put myself first instead of You. I thought that if I did the right things and said the right things it would be enough to enter into Your Kingdom. Help me to put aside my selfish ways and instead humble my heart to hear You and follow You in a deeper way. Change me and mold my heart, my mind, and my soul after You. Forgive me of my sins and encourage me to follow Your will and not my own. Show me how to trust You, to love You, and to put my faith in You, even when times are really difficult and I want to run the other way. Help me to make time for You. Reveal Yourself to me through the scriptures and talking with You through prayer. Give me wisdom to understand what it is You are trying to say to me. Transform me from being a cold or lukewarm Christian to a Christian on fire for You. Thank you Jesus. Amen!
