Song of Songs 6:4 ESV
The voice we hear is the voice of our Lord and the Lover of our souls. He just compared us to the two beautiful cities of Tirzah and Jerusalem, and now to an army with banners.
Must be a guy thing – don’t you think.
Ok – maybe not.
Check this out.
An army with banners would be an army returning from battle. I’m not talking about a sad downcast lot returning from a defeat. This is an army returning victorious. That is what the Lord sees when He looks at you and me. He sees a victorious army.
Hear me now. When the Lord looks at you, He does not see a beaten and broken warrior returning from another day of defeat. He sees an army waving it’s victory banners.
Paul captured this idea in Roman’s 8 where he says:
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. – Romans 8:37 ESV
This phrase “more than conquerors” is a Greek word that tells the story here. It’s a compound word: hupernikaō – I say it like this: hooper nee kay oh.
The last part you probably have heard before – in fact it is one of the most famous brand names: Nike. Nike means conqueror.
When the Lord looks over His beautiful bride, He sees a conquering army – waving her banners of triumph as she returns from the battles of the day.
But Paul does not say we are ‘nike’ – ‘conquerors.’ He adds the superlative prefix to the word, hooper (or hyper.) He doesn’t see us as mere conquerors – He sees us as ‘hyper-conquerors.’ Probably the best word in our language for this is vanquisher.
Now, I know you don’t feel like a vanquisher today, do you. You probably already lashed out at your spouse or lost your patience, temper, cool, purity, composure – something. You may feel like a real looser today, and every day. You may feel like Jesus is wasting His time pursuing you.
It’s not so! No – you did not win this victory – you did not achieve this title of vanquisher. But Jesus did. He did not just defeat death by rising from the grave. He vanquished death, never to have hold on any of His children – ever. Never again could death threaten to undo us. We are untouchable. He put His enemies under our feet!
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. – Luke 10:19 ESV
So, lift up your victory banner today. Don’t sulk around like a defeated looser. Lift up your head, hold your banner high, and sing praise to the One who gave us the victory. King Jesus – the vanquisher of all our foes.
