The Tolerance Myth

Our permissive, worldly culture preaches tolerance as a virtue. But we have allowed tolerance to erode the culture and the church. Today we tolerate divorce, adultery, drug and alcohol abuse, pornography, sin and more. We hear politicians caught in sin refer to it as an “error in judgment.” And we tolerate it. Billy Graham said our tolerant culture has sapped the church of conviction, drained our beliefs, and eroded our faith.

Think of people or groups who espouse broad-mindedness and an “anything goes” attitude. Blanket acceptance for any beliefs, behavior, doctrine, or truth. Tolerance implies willingness to compromise convictions and beliefs in the name of acceptance.

We live in a widely diverse society. The Church is diverse as well. Diverse in worship, traditions, music, beliefs, attire, convictions, missions, programs, congregations, facilities and people. The “Tolerate Myth” implies that we “put up with” those who think, act and believe differently from us. We don’t have to like them or associate with them. We tolerate them, even though, according to our particular beliefs, they are wrong. Rather than judge others as different, let’s seek to advocate for the Church’s common denominator–the life and love of Jesus Christ.

Jesus had a remedy for the tolerance myth,

Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

  1. We are taught toleration in our democratized Christianity but that does not mean we tolerate the intolerable – that is of the antiChrist.

Absolutely agree with this. We might at times appear judgmental, but we must remain steadfast to the Word of God.

    No tolerance. Think. Don’t drink!

Tolerance is not a Christian virtue. Charity, justice mercy, prudence , honesty – these are Christian values – archbishop Charles Chaput

Tolerance is an attitude of reasoned patience toward evil. …a forbearance that restrains us from showing anger or inflicting punishment. Tolerance applies only to persons. ..never to truth. Fulton J. Sheen

Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions . Gilbert K. Chesterton

Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil. Thomas Mann.

    Zero tolerance to abuse.

Evelyn, Thank you for sharing this. Quite interesting how we have so many opinions about tolerance.
