When No One Is Looking

char·ac·ter ˈkerəktər/ noun – the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.

in·teg·ri·ty inˈteɡrədē/ noun – the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. “he is known to be a man of integrity.”

Matthew 12:35 – “The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.”

Proverbs 28:6 – “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.”

1 Corinthians 15:33 – “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

The young man didn’t mean to back into the car as he was leaving the parking lot. But he did.  No one saw.  He had a choice to make.  He left a note and his phone number with an apology.  He did the right thing.

It was on the 9th hole that the golfer leaned down and found a very expensive Rolex watch in the rough.  No one saw.  Should he turn it in or keep it?  After the 18th hole, he went to the country club management and turned it in.  He didn’t have to.  He did the right thing.

The couple was shopping at Costco one Saturday and tripped over an envelope laying on the floor stuffed with cash.  They were amazed. They thought of all the bills they could pay, or maybe even cover the groceries they were buying.  They had a choice.

No one knew they had the money.

They turned it in to management.  A Chinese restaurant owner was frantically looking for it.  The couple did the right thing.

The teenage friends went to a high school party at a friend’s house.  The parents were there. They didn’t expect to find kids drinking heavily, some of whom became ill. They could have joined in on the partying. Their parents would never have known. They didn’t, but they did help their sick school mates and then called a trusted adult to come get them.   They did the right thing.

As she walked through the parking lot something on the ground caught her eye.  She looked down and saw an American Express card.  She picked it up.  How odd, she actually knew the person it belonged to.  Should she call them, leave it or use it?  She called. She didn’t have to.  No one would have known.  She did the right thing.

All of these examples are true stories.  All of these people had the character and integrity to make the tough choice.  In every instance each of them could have made a different choice.  No one would was looking.  But God saw and His Spirit inside of them made all the difference.

Every person on the face of this earth has the choice to do the right thing. Some will choose the right choice whether or not anyone is looking.  But for those who love the Lord, who have chosen Him as their Saviour, the right choice is the only choice….because God sees; and when we make the hard choice – He smiles.

Father God, I am thankful to be able to share these examples to many that the hard choice is the right choice – not because we are “good” people, but because you are a good God, who upon indwelling us can change our hearts, our choices and our actions. When we yield to your Spirit in us, we are telling the world that goodness still exists – through God.  Allow us to always make the right choice and bring glory to you in doing it.

Amen and Amen.

Matthew 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

About setyourpathsstraight

It is my desire to serve God and others through writing; by proclaiming His goodness, provision and character in story form. Though I was not always a follower of Jesus Christ, I have experienced life changes that can only be a result of personally meeting Him. He is not a God of religion, but of relationship. I don't have the answers to life's challenges, but I know where to find them...only in God's Word can any of us stop following crooked paths. The month of my spiritual birthday, I read Proverbs 3:5-6 and claimed it as my life verse... "Trust in the Lord in all you do, lean not on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him.... and He will Set Your Paths Straight." Thank you for your visit today. Please come back again.
