The Roar

the roar 2

Those who have experienced the roar of the lion in the African bush describe it this way “In the darkness it is the sound of raw power, of a predator, fierce, chilling, frightening”. While most of us have not experienced it in the wilds of Africa we have heard the roar.

The roar that tells you are nothing and you always have been you always will be

The roar that tells that may work for everyone else but it won’t for you

The roar that tells you God won’t answer your prayers

The roar that tells you God is punishing you

The roar tells you your husband, your daughter, your son, your daughter are not coming back

The roar that tells you it will always be this way

The roar that says you are a failure

The roar that says if God is really God why did he allow that to happen.

The roar that tells you will not be healed, you will not be free, you will not be delivered And on, and on, and on…..

We have all heard the roar. But do we really understand it’s purpose?

“Most importantly, be disciplined and stay on guard. Your enemy the devil is prowling around outside like a roaring lion, just waiting and hoping for the chance to devour someone”. 1 Peter 5:8

Who is the roaring lion? His name is Lucifer, Satan, the great deceiver, the accuser, the angel of light, the devil. Scripture tells us he rules over a vast, organized and powerful kingdom of evil, opposing everything God has purposed to do. His goal is to destroy us, to make our faith of no use. He wants us to doubt God and His promises. Waiting and hoping for a chance to devour someone But sadly many do not even accept the fact he exists.

C.S. Lewis warned of two potential dangers concerning our enemy

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They are well pleased by both”.  *

Scripture makes it clear that we face a very real enemy and we must be aware of this life or death struggle that has spiritual and eternal ramifications.

We’re not waging war against enemies of flesh and blood alone. No, this fight is against tyrants, against authorities, against supernatural powers and demon princes that slither in the darkness of this world, and against wicked spiritual armies that lurk about in heavenly places”. Ephesians 6:12

How do we avoid “falling prey”to the devil and his schemes. How do we do battle against the roar of the enemy? In Revelations 12 we read of victory that is to come and how that victory is won

“By the blood of the Lamb
and the word of their testimony,
they have become victorious over him”

Our enemy, the one who accused us before God day and night that roared over our lives is finally and forever defeated. In this present time we accept this victory, we overcome him by the blood of Christ when we acknowledge our sinfulness (Romans 3:23) and accept the grace of forgiveness and redemption from all sin, past present and future.

We overcome him by the word of our testimony, and our testimony is that we believe God. We believe what He says about our present and our future regardless of our circumstances. No matter what the roar might say…

The Word that says

God is good and what He does is good. Psalm 119:68

If we ask anything according to His will He will do it 1 John 5:14

Our prayers are powerful when they are rooted in a righteous life. James 5:16

He has promised to never leave or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5-6

We do not have to be anxious or worried Philippians 4:4-6

We are not what we once were Ephesians 2:1-5; 2 Corinthians 5:17

We are redeemed Ephesians 1:7

We are forgiven 1 John 1:9

We are chosen Ephesians 1:11

We have been rescued from the dominion of darkness Colossians 1:13

We have been brought into his Kingdom Colossians 1:13

We are His sons and daughters and heirs. Romans 8:17
Our suffering not worthy to be compared to what is to come Romans 8:18

When you hear the roar of the enemy focus on these and the many other promises and remember “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” James 4:17

We have overcome the world. 1 John 5:4

“Now at last they were beginning chapter One of the great story no one on earth has read: which goes on forever”. I love this line at the end of the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Everyone has a story to tell and ultimately we are all part of a greater story that someday will be revealed in full. “ For now, we can only see a dim and blurry picture of things”. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). My story is not remarkable, although the events I have had the privilege in my life to witness have been. I grew up in the south “the land of cotton” and the old times there were definitely not forgotten. I remember where I was and what I was doing when JFK and Martin Luther King were murdered in Dallas and in Memphis. I remember the Civil Rights movement, a time of great unrest and change. I remember the dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” in the late 1960’s. It was also the dawning of my love for playing music, a love that has stayed with me throughout my life. If my life were chapters in a book one would tell of my precious bride of 20+ years who endured so much and stood beside me through the good and the bad. One would describe the blessings of being a father and a grandfather. One would tell about how despite being “the wretch” the song sings about God was able to change me, and use me to make a difference in others lives, make me a servant in His church, and surround me with friends all because of His goodness. All part of a story that has had many twists and turns. I think of the words Jimmy Buffet wrote in one of my favorite songs "As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man I have chalked up many a mile Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles" And so it is true for me. But in all of my travels and all I have read and experienced nothing compares to where I am headed. The place where my story here ends and the story that goes on forever begins! "" I am confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day He returns". Philippians 1:6 My hope is that as we all run our race that in some small way my words will encourage and speak to you, as your story is being written. And draw you ever closer to the One who loves you. Further up and further in!

When we hear the lion roar, we have just to remember that we belong to the Lion of Judah, who is mightier than the lion who aims to cause us to fear and take flight into sin.
The Lion of Judah on the other hand, sets the captives free to live victoriously in Him.
    Praise The Lord.
