Children of wrath are biblically defined as the “past tense state” of a converted sinner. A sinner by nature is a man out of harmony with God. A sinner whose will is broken by the power of the Holy Spirit is converted to Christ and thus delivered from the wrath of God that will come. The verse below speaks about man “before” he comes to Christ. Children of wrath fulfill the desires of the flesh and mind and naturally reject a Savior. Their actions, behavior, and thinking are in opposition to the holiness of God. Human nature doesn’t understand the things of God. Godly things are foolish to children of wrath.
Ephesians 2:3…Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath,
The Roman Letter describes the natural man as an enemy to God. When we were – past tense.
Romans 5:6…For when we were yet without strength
Romans 5:9,10…Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies (past tense), we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Children of wrath are many around the globe. The Bible describes children of wrath as those who got away from a life of sin and disobedience because Christ changed them morally by the power of the Gospel. Some think they are right with God but they really are not. Some go through the motions of religious worship but they miss Christ our Lord and Savior. God’s wrath still abides over children of wrath that are deceived by sin. If you read your Bible you will find that children of wrath were recognized in the days of Noah as those who did not get into the Ark. Children of wrath have no mercy from God Almighty. Divine Judgment is made by an angry God unless children of wrath “turn from their meanness” and find Christ and the power of His Salvation within the human soul.
The Bible teaches us that the past tense of a convert stands under the Judgment of an angry God. The present tense of a convert stands in the daily presence of Christ, innocent and in right-standing with God, not condemned but welcomed by the Spirit with open arms. Children of wrath do no have this blessed state of being. Children of wrath must hear, learn, and be taught of a Savior’s love for fallen man. The Gospel is God’s vehicle of reaching the children of wrath before they die in sin; or until Christ Raptures the Church.
