It’s Up To You Now…

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

“It’s your life to live”, they said to the young man.

“When you were young we carried you. When you began to walk, we held your hand and kept you safe. When you could run, we let go for a wee bit, but watched you closely and anxiously waited with open arms…for you to run back to them. As you have grown, we have cautiously allowed you space to roam new places and spaces. Like shepherds, we watched from afar to scan the horizons for wolves or wolves in sheep’s clothing. When they came, which they invariably did, we stepped in when you needed us or allowed you to fight it out on your terms.

We have given to you as much wisdom as we have. We have shared our faith and our own journey’s to calling Jesus as our Saviour.  We have taught you the importance of loving well and living with character and distinction. We have tried to be an example of this to you…not always successfully.

But it’s up to you now.  We will still be waiting with open ears and arms.  We won’t ever stop that.  But it is your turn to practice what you have learned, to own the decisions that will help or hinder you. To reap the blessing or the consequence and employ the wisdom and discernment the Lord has given you. We love you. We trust you. We will pray for you – that in the still quiet spaces of your heart – that you will remember the most important lesson we taught. Always, “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call on Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:6)”

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.

She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed. By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.

My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. Proverbs 3:1-23

About setyourpathsstraight

It is my desire to serve God and others through writing; by proclaiming His goodness, provision and character in story form. Though I was not always a follower of Jesus Christ, I have experienced life changes that can only be a result of personally meeting Him. He is not a God of religion, but of relationship. I don't have the answers to life's challenges, but I know where to find them...only in God's Word can any of us stop following crooked paths. The month of my spiritual birthday, I read Proverbs 3:5-6 and claimed it as my life verse... "Trust in the Lord in all you do, lean not on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him.... and He will Set Your Paths Straight." Thank you for your visit today. Please come back again.

This post is the perfect words to say to a child when they reach adulthood. I will be facing that in a few years myself. You have given me confidence to handle that situation by posting this. Thank you 🙂

    • Thank you for your kind words and insight. Our young man is indeed on the steps to his adulthood and this last year has taught us a lot. Mixed feelings are the norm, as the mama inside me wants to hold on to my youngling and keep him in the nest….but the woman in me knows it is time for him to fly on his own. Very bitter sweet. But in the end, our job is to raise them to leave, hopefully well prepared and girded for their futures. Let us just pray that all our young men and women make a “soft landing.” Blessings on your own youngling too. 😉
